From what I can gather, the '97 vintage of Bordeaux fell short of
expectations. En primeur prices were high, and then fell. The vintage
(apparently) did meet expectations (or live up to the hype -- you
choose). Nevertheless, this '97 was just fine, really fine actually.
Fruit present, tannins in check, all in all, very well balanced. It's
primary shortcoming (which might be characteristic of the vintage) is
that the wine was not that deep or rich. Very tasty, but it did not
linger or coat the palate. I have another and I am very much looking
forward to drinking it. I suspect that it will not improve meaningfully
in the future, although another year or so will probably not hurt it
Day 2: The wine was clearly no better, and maybe a bit worse, suggesting, at least to me, that it is ready to go.
