2002 Thorn-Clarke Shiraz Terra Barossa Syrah

My only Thorne Clarke to date...and it was a winner. A dark berry/plummy flavor and hints of smoke. Thich and rich it really coats the mouth and finishes very nicely with the smoke and berry note lingering on...

I will be seeking out more TS shiraz.

"Potenially stunning" sayeth Robert M. Parker in his positive review and I was stunned...stunned at how much I hated this wine. All I can say is I felt like I was sucking on a cheap lollipop with some kind of synthetic fruit flavoring. Truly a horrible experience.

This one (besides the Hayne) is my favorite Turley vineyard. Just the right balance of powerful fruit and spice notes. Now I say balanced but let`s face it...Turley`s are decadent fruit bombs that really stand well on their own: no food required. If you are in the market for a Turley this is a perfect choice, priced on the low end of their pricing structure and worth every penney. Thank you Larry and Helen for practically perfecting this varietal!

Well...if this is any indication of how California can make bordeaux style blends we are in for a treat. If you put this side by side with a 3rd or 4th growth from a decent vinage you would be hard pressed to tell the difference. Classic bordeaux style gaminess is present and a silky texture. Smooth and supple this one drinks very well right now.

1999 Turley Cellars Zinfandel Duarte Vineyard Zinfandel

I love Zins so I am biased. I have had the 99, 00, 01 and 02 vintages of Turley and this Duarte 99 was one of my favs. I found the nose to be lacking but the wine to be packed with jammy, berry flavors. Definetly a fruit dominated Zin and light on the spicey notes but they do linger a bit on the smooth lasting finish.

My two spanish reds are this one and the Marqes de Riscal. This one is a simpler wine, lacking the cedar, meaty flavor of the other (at least for this vintage, I haven`t compared them all). It is a tad lighter, more fruit forward. Still, it is soft and approachable and quite quaffable.

I am continually amazed at the quality of some of these $10-$15 wines from around the world. It is a good time to be a wine drinker indeed.

I love this wine - soft and smoky, but not at all cloying. Medium colored and bodied. Cedary, meaty, a bit of tobacco...this one would would go well with a steak but is easy drinking enough to stand on its own.

I didn`t think I would ever have a "light" Aussie Red but here it is. I guess it is the Grenache mixed in there - not my favorite grape. Nonetheless the Shiraz amps it up just enough to make it a palatable red for me - soft and supple, low tannic bite, just a tad on the sweet side.

A fine shiraz, this one has classic plum and blueberry flavors, a nice mouthfeel and a rich finish. I like it as a change of pace from the Paringa Shiraz, which is a better value IMO.

Good now, but could certainly withstand some cellering.

Put this one in your lineup for white lovers (or anyone else for that matter). Don`t tell them what a great bargain it is, it could easily pass for a Kistler.

Bursting with apricot and grapefuit, packed with layers of flavor and a full, lasting finish. Delicious, inviting nose of citris fruit. Awesome wine. Extremely refreshing.

2000 Frog's Leap Merlot Napa Merlot
WS gave 78..what can I say?

WS describes it as "earthy, mulchy, green style". Well I got the earth and mulch out of mine but not the green. I don`t really like Merlots and I got this as a gift. I popped it open and expected nothing but I must say, I found that earthiness attracting. It was unique, and it was mixed with a touch of a meaty flavor too. Interesting. I don`t pretend that this is a good wine but I gave it an 87 because I enjoyed my experience of drinking it. It was a break from the fruit dominated Cabs or mouth coating complexity of Aussie Shiraz I usually drink. If it were cheaper, I would drink it again. If you come across it try it, don`t let the WS 78 scare you away.

A simple, everyday wine. Purple in color, slight fruit on the nose. Tannins are barely perceptible. Simple fruit flavor of the "hot Cab" type (i.e. no vegetal flavors) and a short finish. No obvious flaws but I do find the wine to be ever so slightly cloying after repeated sips (i.e by the 2nd bottle lol). That could just be me though, so I certainly would give it a go at $12 a bottle, you could do a LOT worse. This is the PERFECT wine for your friends or family who like "red wine" and don`t really know or care what they are drinking. They will likely be blown away by it (probably due to the sweetness I mentioned).

Had this one the same night as a 96 Cali Cab. What a great contrast. This one is deep purple and vibrant and loaded with fresh fruit and a touch of spice. Tannins are young and present but the wine is balanced. Lots of current/plum/black cherry flavor careening around the mouth that linger on a long rich finish. This wine is packed with fruit and tannin and so will probably be even better in a few years, but if you like them young you will not be disappointed right now.

A mature Cali Cab this wine shows an orangey tint on the edges. Tannins have mellowed out and the wine has a nice mouthfeel and a smooth rich finish. Fruit is present but not dominant and everything is nicely in balance with a kind of earthy feel (which I quite like, but is not for everyone I guess). I really enjoyed this wine!

Classic Zin berries dominate...with a touch of spice but not much. my wife, who does not like spicy wines (and therefore not many Zins) loves this one. This wine pulls the sides of my tongue with an acidic bite that cause me to crave more. It is refreshing and lively. Swish it around your mouth and let that feeling coat the inside and you will be one happy camper..if you like Zin berry. 48k cases made at around $15-17 a bottle...who could ask for more? If Seghesio keeps pumping out juice like this my wait for the Turley mailing list will not seem so bad at all.....

Well Parker gave 97 and WS gave 89.

I`ll be honest, I lack the ability to see the future. Right now, I agree with WS in that the wine is almost too ripe and rich. But I`ll tell you this; there is enough complexity in the glass to pique my interest down the road. The wine is loaded with fruit and also tannin and acidity so it is not out of balance...it is just rough around the edges with that overripe tatse pushing through. A wine that will illicit a wide range of responses I would say, it would be nice to buy a case and try them over 5 to 15 years...too bad it is $90 a bottle so I won`t do that. lol. But I have 2 more!

Best Zin I`ve ever had. A monster in the mouth this wine is loaded with spiced infused fruit. How Parker can taste 3 distinct berries is beyond me, but suffice it to say the "berry" element is profound. The core is spice. The finish really lingers, and repeated sips plump it all up on the palate so that you are oh so sad when the last delicious drop is gone from your glass..........

This wine has no obvious flaws, but neither does it have any obvious strengths to make it memorable in anyway. It has a bright berry nose, a pleasing mouthfeel with acidity and sweetness nicely balanced, and smooth tannins. Fruity, but not fruit bomby, and not spicey. The finish is short but pleasant. An easy drinking Cab.

A food group?

The color is more red than purple, to be expected of course. I closed my eyes and stuck my nose in the glass and breathed in and said "wait a minute, did I mistakenly stick my nose in a cedar box that had once had some earthy loam in it instead of my wine glass??". I removed my nose and returned to reality. I took a sip, swished and swallowed..I was greeted with a distinct flavor of wild game, a beefy, brawny, meaty, dense flavor. I certainly wouldn`t describe it as "fruity" but there was evidence of dried fruit flavors bouncing around in there. Long finish. I confess I didn`t pair this with food, I actually drank it while I watched the movie Spinal Tap (excellent by the way, and full of subtleties, just like this wine...so they were a good pair). But given that roasted meat flavor, I kind of felt like I was eating anyway. Weird. Hence my review title: Is this wine its own food group? Discuss amongst yourselves. Enjoy.

This Shiraz is flat out deeelish. It starts with a gush of plummy fruit and slowly melts away in the mouth to finish with a peppery sort of flavor. Not a spicy pepper mind you, but a balanced almost sweet pepper. Tannins are balanced...a small bite on the cheek but overall I would say smooth. A real mouth full, this wine is an incredible value. In my opinion it is better than their 2002 Cab, which is also a good value.

This wine is terrific. Supple, silky, velvety...all these words spring to mind. Dense fruit flavor that kicks into overdrive on the finish which is long and smooth. Nicely balanced tannins...this baby is ready to drink right now...it is delicious...I don't know how it would cellar and I can't imagine it could taste much better than it does right now so I pick drink now to 2 years.
