Syrah, a red wine varietal, gained its reputation in France's Rhône region for its ability to produce serious red wines capable of long term ageing. Young Syrahs are deep-colored and tannic, with strong tar, spice, and pepper qualities. As they slowly mature, however, they take on characteristics of sweet blackberries, black currants and plums, with hints of smokiness.
