Israel lays claim to being the cradle of the world's wine industry with the fruit of the vine having long been revered and economically important there. Israel's viticulture is divided into five regions: Galilee, Samaria, Samson, Judean Hills, and the Negev. Carignan, Grenache, Sémillon, Chenin Blanc, and Muscat of Alexandria are still widely planted, however varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc, Reisling, and Chardonnay have been planted with considerable success.
