The rule of thumb with pasta is to match the wine with the sauce, and tomato sauces generally demand a red wine, although white wines will work as well. An acidic Sauvignon Blanc is probably the best choice for white, while a Barbera, Nebbiolo, Sangiovese,or Zinfandel all marry well. If the tomato sauce has meat mixed with it, a full-bodied Merlot or Montepulciano, or Cabernet Sauvignon should do the trick.
