Hearty stews just beg for a rustic, full-flavored red wine. Young Cote du Rhone, Barbera, Shiraz and Zinfandel all work extremely well with whatever meat you use in it. If the stew is fairly simple, however, then a more elegant Pinot Noir from Burgundy or Oregon will do fine as would a soft-styled Sangiovese from Chianti.
