2006 - Trapiche Broquel, Malbec |
Jan 09, 2009 |
|
|
Dark purple core with a fuchsia rim. Alluring, complex and
spicy aromas of nutmeg, plum and black cherry around a hint of dark
earth. Very easy entry on the palate. Plush and medium bodied with
black cherry flavors accented by smoke, wet stone and blackberries.
Medium acidity balancing out the rich fruit with a lingering dusty
cocoa finish.
Throw a rack of
lamb on the grill (yes, buy some lamb at your local grocery store, it's
delicious) and pour a tall glass of this wine. Rich, smooth and easy
drinking with a good dose of spice and smoke makes this the perfect
companion to grilled meats. A Portobello cheeseburger would stand up
very well too, and the acid of the Malbec will cut right through the
fat in the gooey swiss cheese that should be melting off it. |

2005 - Dona Paula Malbec Seleccion de Bodega |
Stunning; and I've had a lot of Malbec! |

Black core with a vibrant purple and fuchsia rim. The nose overflows with creme de cassis, blueberry syrup, black cherries, sweet vanilla & cedar spice, all surrounded by lighter floral notes and a touch of sandalwood. The entry onto the palate is bright and fruit full of lush raspberries, red and black cherries over a hint of sweet tea, dark chocolate and cinnamon. Full bodied with round tannins that are very well integrated. This wine is young and will continue to improve for another 5 or so years, but it is beautiful now as well. |

Decent Table Wine |

Good quaffer. This wasn't anything exceptional, but again it's a decent table wine that offers enough complexity to enjoy with a simple meal. Light cherry and tabacco with strong oak coming through on the palate. A little too much alcohol and dirt but it's good for the price. |

This was wine was light on the wallet and palate. Light smoked cherry and dirt are the main things I'm picking up. Some oak chip flavors are in there as well, but for the money I don't think anyone will be too disappointed. Food helps! |

Big Bold Cocoa |

This wine was extremely rich and vevlety... I let this one breath for a few hours. It revealed dark cherry on the nose and hints of chocolate. The cocoa is dry and flaked all over your palate- making it taste like you're drinking chocolate covered strawberries. |

Nothing like the 2005 - just all over the place and not in a good way at all. I will say that it was fairly well balanced. The finish tended towards acidic over time. An ok wine based on the price, but I would still say pass compared to the 2005. |

Enjoyable Value |

Good for the price but not blowing me away. Nose is strong with alcohol-tinged, slightly overripe fruit. Relatively full-bodied for an Argentinian wine, with little of the mineral qualities that typically distinguish offerings from this region. Not unpleasant, but almost had more characteristics of a California Zinfandel than a Malbec from this region. |

This wine reminds me quite a bit of a Chianti with the exuberant sour cherry and the horsey, earthy, stinky, and even spicy aspects, the high acidity. There are some very nice tannins to make this nice and dry too, and the finish is clean, but overall it is not too well balanced for our palates. Balance keeps it from getting 3 stars. |

This is much more elegant style Malbec than the wines from Argentina, but it doesn't lack the strength you expect from Malbec. Nice roundness in the mouth, and beautiful vanilla oak surrounds this extremely smooth Malbec. |

This wine is a bit of a bully, but a nice bully. It pounds your palate with its rich cocoa and anise flavors, but then backs off on the finish and ends on a nice smoother cherry sauce flavor. |

My only complaint on this wine is that it comes off a little bit too simple. Other vintages have been more complex. However, for the price it still delivers excellent fruit and earth undertones. |

This was a very exciting wine for the $16 I paid for it. This is easily confused for a $40+ of Argentina Malbec. This is the best vintage of this bottling so far to date. Tight wine, but it opens up with nice pepper, light chocolate, black berries and dirt. |

This wine was fine when I had it 2 years ago, but it was peaking even then. If you have this bottle, time to open it. Expect cherries and tobacco, but maybe a little bit of alcohol starting to really pop up. |

My bottle, I'm pretty sure was corked so its tough to review this bottle. However, if it wasn't corked, it was just plain awful. No fruit, wet newspaper and dirt. |

This vintage has significantly benefited from bottle ageing, which gives me hopes for my 2003 bottles. The oak has blended into the fruit and carries it with a nice vanilla finish. The cherry and earth are the best characters and the anise is nice on the finish. |

I was somewhat surprised by the quality of this wine. The currant and smoke are interesting but its the cocoa and cherry flavors that dominate the mouth. There is some chewiness, so food might be a nice way to calm that down. |

Decent wine and exceptional for the money. This is a great wine to pair with a big juicy steak. This wine needs no food, but it helps calm down some of the oak and a little bit of the jammines. Nice carmel action too. |
