2001 - Castelnau De Suduiraut
Untitled Review #Q

Promising start with a nose of sandalwood, cashew, and sunflower petals with complex spice developing and a touch of the tobacco, all ruined by a backwards finish of acetone, printer ink, and mechanical pencil lead. The palate is utterly senescent but softens momentarily to become borderline approachable. Extreme acidity and flaccid finish. Pairs well with garlic fries, without the ketchup. Good Day.

Wow what a beautiful pale golden color (clean and clear). Absolutely intoxicating aromas of peach, ripe citrus, and apricot confiture. Shows tons of botrytis but remains fresh and lively on the mid-palate. Lots of toasty marshmallow and charred oak with everything in the right place (and in the right proportion). Loaded with fruit, but replete with the proper acidty. Delicious and rich

Pour this on vanilla ice cream and enjoy.  This had apricots and vanilla pear notes running through your palate and doing jumping jacks.  It's very thick on the palate, but the oak cuts into it a little bit and takes away from what would otherwise be 4+ stars.

This was another excellent desert wine. It smells of sweet nectar and honey. The taste is like nectar from heaven. There's strong honey and nectar flavors as well as peach and mango. It's creamy and delicious and I wish I could have more!

This is one of the most expensive and most impressive bottles I have ever had the privelege of drinking.  Best over the next 50+ years - it has wonderful apricot, tangerine, and peach flavors on the palate. The flavors stay in your mouth for days. Literally!

Perfection

This was the best of the vintages I have tried at my Dads house. The wine is magic on the palate with precision perfect acidity, totally alive and fresh with waves of taste sensations that make this wine so special. Hugely concentrated flavours of fruit. You know you are drinking something special and the graceful finish completes a perfect wine. Don't drink this wine yet, leave it at least another 10 years. Can happily age for 70 years.

Awesome Every Time

And again this wine dominates, in the glass the wine is a striking golden colour with tints of green. After some period of decanting the nose comes forward in spades pouring forth honey and almonds, with cream and pineapples in support.

Again - the wine was awesome, rich, massive and one of the longest finishes that I have come across. The apricots and lemons were bouncing around the room like they just didn't care.

Desert Anyone?

I love the big fruit that is dipped in a heavenly sweet sugar sauce. Chateau d'Yquem lives up to its reputation and more. It is a dessert wine, of course, but to eat it with dessert would almost be a waste. It is a dessert on par with the most incredible desserts in the world all by itself. This vintage is the best I've tasted yet, and it will definitely only get better with age.

The actual length of the wine was amazing - I could taste it 5 minutes later. Simply magic. The sweet apricot, peach and pear flavors are covered in a a carmel nut sauce. Beautiful wine.

A Sticky not a Sicky

i've had this wine once before and this is definitely a sticky worth trying.  it's all honey and sweetness on the nose that translates right to the palate with a rich profusion of honeysuckle and maple syrup (just not that viscous).  the acid balance is just right in the bottle to keep you from believing that you are drinking molasses.

another 5 outta 5 starzz.

Delicious Dessert Wine

Had the Guiraud with a lemon bunt iced caked and lavender ice cream. A very complex and balanced sauternes with sweet honey on the nose along with a hint of pineapple and botrytris . Sweet yet balanced by the acid and a long lingering finish of honey.  Not a d' Yquem but at a fraction of the price, a delicious sauternes.

Great year, but too much of the good juice is in first label.

Bright golden color, clear along the edges. Nose of Botrytis, dried pineapple and saffron. Full bodied, overly sweet, needs more acidity. Finished with botrytis and saffron notes. Hot finish.

Bright golden color. Nose of burnt sugar, dried pineapple, dried apricot and a little botrytis. Medium-full bodied, with over ripened pineapple. Very nicely balanced, with saffron on the long finish. Nice value here.

90% Semillion Grapefruity, grassy nose initially, very surprizing. It turned to the normal, pleasent mix of tropical fruits and saffron. Very tropical in the mouth. Passionfruit, melon and a bit of botrytis. Sauternes is my favorite type of wine, this was the best Sauternes I've ever had. Outstanding wine.

Drank at Courtrights in the Chicago suburbs. This was recorked in 2005, which was quite surprizing (Also 15% alcohol.) Beautiful golden amber color. The nose was etheral. Orange blossom honey, burnt sugar and caramel also present. Full bodied, etheral and balanced. Lots of caramel, got hints of amaretto, too. The finish was very spicy. We drank this with foie gras, creme brulee and a browned butter almond cake. The cake was unbelievable. It paired very well. Not so well with the creme. The burnt sugar was too much. The sommelier enjoyed this as well. Though this was my first truely aged Sauternes, I didn't enjoy it as much as the 2003 Lafaurie. 94 pts.

Bright golden color.  Nose of saffron, burnt sugar, creme caramel and butterscotch.  In the mouth, thick, bright acidity and great balance.  Can't wait to see what it's big brother is like.

still going strong

I know that this is not an estate-bottled, fancy, cru. Nevertheless, after 35 years or so, it was delicious. There was enough sugar so that the wine still had a hint of sweetness, and as one might imagine, all the other flavors were resolved. Perfect balance. I am partial to Sauternes, but this was a beauty that I bought on a lark last fall. Amazing.

second label still very tasty

some malign 2003 for being flabby, lacking acid, but that makes this second label sauternes that much more accessible young. Thick sweet, rich botrytis honey coats your mouth without much complexity or bite. Great deal, it won't last forever but it tastes fine now.
