2005 - Thorn-Clarke Cabernet Sauvignon Terra Barossa
Candy apple aromas
Nov 03, 2010
1 star 1 star 1 star
The Thorn-Clarke Terra-Barossa Importer's Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, 2005, is a cabernet sauvignon from the Thorn-Clarke label, whose shiraz I have enjoyed a great deal.In the glass, this shows as a medium dark, though bright, red.The nose is fruity and lifted, sweet plumy - a bit like cru beaujolais. Hint of candy apple. On the palate, there is a distinct note of perfumed fruit - just a touch furry and red, medium in body, sweet in tone. A very "centered" experience, picking up interesting notes in the mid-palate, less in the attack, mouthfeel and finish. Three stars out of five for me.Past vintages have tended to score professionally around 90 points, though I have not yet seen reviews of the 2005. ------------------After a full-day decanting: Nose has taken on an odd, rubbery component. Otherwise muted. Flavors have definitely softened, still good balance. Inky black cherry elements come to the fore.More reviews at spiritofwine.blogspot.com

Too Much Alcohol

This is almost a really good wine. Nice structure balanced tannins, but a tad hot, the alcohol barely stands up to the fruit and leave a bit of a bitter aftertaste in your mouth. The wine is luscious and velvety but overall, suffers from a bit too much alcohol all over the palate.

Not as well rounded as the blend. Very fruity...black fruit explosion, currents, blueberries, blackberries. The nose smells thick and deep (if that means anything to you). Slightly leathery but the fruit compensates. Best to drink now.

This was the weakest of the bunch - over the years this wine has gotten better or my palate has changed.  Its finish was really short (almost non-existent) and the oak flavor got stronger the longer the bottle was open. It certainly isn't bad, it's just not interesting.

better than 2004 but not the 2003. Nose: fruit snacks, jam. Taste: fruity, oaky. This is a perfectly good week-night kind of wine that would probably go well with food.

Not the 2003.  Mid-palate shows some green pepper and unpleasant menthol, which blows off to leave a pleasant and surprisingly long finish. A decent choice for a non-descript dinner wine but I'd spend a few more bucks and get something better - or spend the same amount and get the 2003 vintage of this wine.

This wine has an unbelievable Cabernet Sauvignon nose, like Cabernet Sauvignon Kool-Aid. Smooth, resolved tannins, moderate acidity, good mouth-feel. Palate is a bit grapey but reasonably believable Cab Sauv, dominated by a baker's chocolate note and a bit of candied plum.

The 2004 was complex enough that I thought I would try the 2005 - well it went the other direction.  Big fake fruit that can't come out until it's killed by alcohol and oak - this is what you would expect from this wine - 2004 must have been a fluke.

This wine surprised me with a solid backbone of deep cherry and woodsy nose. Tart, plum and cherry flavors with a smooth finish that maintains the cherry overtone. A very good wine for the price point.

Again a very nice vintage, a great value wine with over-the-top fruit and sweet vanilla oak.  This wine makes me sound like a broken record, but it seems to be very consistent year after year.  The alcohol is a little bit higher again in this vintage.

Wonderful wine.  The big jammy fruit, raspberry, strawberry and blueberry jam all rolled into this over-the-top Australian Cabernet.  This isn't meant for the cellar, it's meant to enjoy now, and enjoy it I shall.

The only reason this didn't score higher for me, was the high alcohol coming through.  It unfortunately took away from the fruit that was actually really nice.  Big cherry, rasberry, and blueberry fruit with sweet vanilla oak.

This is a wine I could drink everyday and not get sick of.  The big bold fruit that this low priced wine is amazing.  The vanilla oak and tobacco flavors that pop up all your tongue are also nice.  Drink while it's still young, not meant to cellar.

Over oaked and lacking the character that I would hope for on a Cabernet.  This wine is a little too hot and it wouldn't pair well with most foods.  Drink now.

Great deep garnet hue. The nose reveals nice fatty lush fruit. On the palate there is a wonderful dark fruits (blackberries and black cherry), a full mouth feel with an almost unbelievable balance of tannins and acid that I have ever found in this sub-$20 range. It reminds me a bit of the Hess Estate 2001 Cabernet. Just bigger. Not a hard edge in sight. The aftertaste is nice and long as well.

Great deep color. A good tight grip of tannins wrapping around a core of dark currant, tar, cocoa, and cassis. A lovely classic Napa styled Cabernet made to please

Good But Not Great

This cabernet is lacking the fruit and finese that the shiraz delivers.  This is a stronger more balanced Aussie Cabernet than most, but it still gets a little too high in the alcohol and fake fruit.

Wow! This one aged nicely even though it didn't go thru optimum cellar conditions (passive cellar). The fruit (berries) is still present. Long finish, tastes like an aged bordeaux. Definitely an Old World style. Tannis are soft now with an hint of mint. Very complex. Should have bought more bottles. Paid $15.

Great cabernet from the Barossa Valley, Thorne-Clarke continues to bring the public great wines at a magnificent value. A great every day drinkable wine that you will love. Although the Barossa is more famous for Shiraz, this is ag reat cabernet with a deep red earthly quality. Tanins are sometimes present at the bottom of the bottle but that does not detract from this wines intrinsic value.

89 pts the 1st day. It just was too OTT drinking against some old world wines. Pts reflect the next day. Nice to drink by itself. Like a cocktail. Delicious. Fruit fwd. More like an Aussie Shiraz. Totally coats your mouth, like eating caramel. Not much tannins. I don't think this will age much, but I'm not exp enuf to tell.

The btle I had B4 was not showing much, so maybe that was a bad one?
