2006 - Yellow Tail Merlot
Taking one for the team...

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe this is called, "taking one for the team"...This is the merlot entry in the "practically free" Yellow Tail line of Australian varietals, one of the more widely-consumed wines in the United States, and purported a reasonably good value. Let's see what we've got...In the glass, this looks like a serious contender, deep mahogany/purple at the edges, and becoming opaque within a quarter inch or so. The nose is fairly shy, offering slightly dark, plum aromas, reminiscent of a somewhat creamy Beaujolais. On the palate, is a solid frontal note of charred cherry, backed by a touch of sweetness and acid. The flavor then curls up into a sort of acidic marshmallow ball at the top of your mouth. Not much in the way of a finish. Pleasant enough for two stars, a plus because of its aromatic intrigues; I don't think I'd seek it out again so it stops shy of three stars, which would have made it a stand-out value. So, there you have it: "practically free" wine... tolerable drinking.More reviews at spiritofwine.blogspot.com.

This was much better and more enjoyable than the 2005. I tried it without the "Mollydooker Shake" and it was very thick (syrupy) and luscious. Tastes of dark chocolate and mint rolled off of my palette. Second, after the "Mollydooker shake" it was a little more smooth and drinkable. It's still got a huge thickness to it, but there is a tameness about it now. Plus, it has these cool bubbles that form after you shake it in the bottle!

Just ok - pass compared to others. This was a very big wine that seemed thick, but it was smooth and enjoyable. I was a little underwhelmed after all of the other Mollydooker wines. Good raspberry but too much alcohol.

Better than the riesling, but still a major pass for me.  Too dry and weak on the palate - leads me to think its just alcoholic fruit punch thats been dumped in water.

This was ok, but not as good as the other Yellow Tail wines I've had.  Big fake fruit, with high alcohol cutting over the wine.  Overall it was just a little to flabby and cheap tasting for me.

Warm Wine

This warm was a little bit "warm" on the palate, and it gave me the impression that it was missing an ingredient or two.  Hard to explain.  Overall this was a good value but a little lacking on the balance.

A little higher alcohol coming through on the palate compare to the other Mollydooker wines, but still a solid effort that is worth seeking out.  Just make sure you get the shiraz first.

... this was too hot, too thick, not at all graceful.
