1998 - Prager Riesling Smaragd Weissenkirchen Klaus
Why is Riesling the greatest white wine grape?

the Weissenkirchner vineyardBecause even in "difficult" vintages, the best producers make wines that not only last, but continue to gain complexity and depth. This Riesling Smaragd (comparable to Auslese in Germany) from the tough 1998 vintage shows none of the high alcohol, and just the subtlest hint of the botrytis that plagued many of the best (dry) Austrian whites from this vintage.  The only hint that this wine is over 10 years old comes from the beautiful, bright green-gold color.  The bouquet offers ever-changing yet delicate aromas of lavender, acacia honey, dried apricots and almonds.  On the palate, a crisp, full entry, and flavors of apricot, honey,  nectarine, and minerals.  Though there is plenty of acidity (this would sing with almost any food), the wine's balance is uncanny, with a round and rich, almost saline quality and a long, juicy finish of unbelievable energy for a 10+ year old wine from a mediocre vintage. This wine is compelling proof that Prager is one of the world's great masters of dry Riesling.  If you find any of the very fine '06 vintage or the spectacular '07, I really hope you'll grab as much as you can afford--but please put a few bottles deep into the corners of your cellar, and forget about them for a decade or two!

This was my favorite of the vertical because of the fruit.  It was crisp, concise and targeted the palate perfectly.  Nice lemon and pineapple with sweet melon and orange peel.  The acidity is perfect.

Good not Great

This was my least favorite of the 04 and 06 vintages vertical tasting I did of this wine.  It was still good but the fruit seemed to be a bit off and the oak started to peak through a little bit more than on the other two vintages. Seek out the 04 or 06.

I bought 3 bottles each of 3 different vintages of this wine when my Daughter Sophie was born, and we pop'd one of each on the day after her birth.  This was my second favorite.  Nice crisp mouth feel, and wonderful starfruit on the finish. Pair with asain food or thai.

I love rieslings and I haven't had much Austrian ones and this was quite awesome.  Very concentraed citrus notes with gravel and has a bite.  Long finish.  I should get more and try more of Austrian's rielsings

Refreshing summer quaffer

Rich golden color in the glass. Aromas of citrus, grapefruit and peach. A veritable fruit salad on the palate. Finishes smoothly and rather long. This is a wonderful summer quaffer, either by itself or with food. A great alternative to New Zealand sauvignon blanc.

How do you say delicious in German? Wachau, Domane Riesling Smaragd Trocken Weisskirchner Prager Riesling - that's how silly! Nice fruit of apricot, peach and apple with pear undertones all pour through your mouth with a nice crisp feel!

This is a riesling, not a riesling and gruner as it says.

Very true to the hot 2003 year this is lush, with nice viscosity and enough intensity and structure to probably last many years.

Refreshing, Passion fruit, reminded me ofa cross between NZ Sauv Blanc and CA. Dodn'y get typical white pepper notes of a grunerbut had a kind of jalepeno zing to it on the finish.

I'm not a white wine drinker, but this one is excellent!  Aroma of green apples and a sparkly sweet/tart taste.
