2005 - Clos Saint-Jean Chateauneuf du Pape Deus Ex Machina

The nose was all exotic spices and black cherries. The palate reveals some silky and uber-ripened black cherries, black pepper, soy, cedar, vanilla and some crushed pebbles. That rich exotic quality is sure present through-out. A medium weight mouthfeel with some deftly balanced tannins, which were just slightly angular, and a moderate acid base. A long finish of 90+ seconds. This wine needs at least 5 more years to show itself as it was surely holding back about 50% of what I believe it could be: A wonderfully elegant but powerfully possessive character-filled Châteauneuf. It really has it all, it just needs to come together.

Dark, dense, opaque red to cherry red rim.  Dusty nose full of spice, soft blackberry and cherry fruit with a touch of oak, menthol, and some eucalyptus.  Soft entry onto the palate , this medium-bodied wine features flavors of cherry and blackberry carried through to the medium length finish by a hint of mint, dried tobacco, and a touch of dried herbs.  Shows great balance between acid, tannins, and alcohol. Drink now – 2015

Medium to dark red with a clear rim.  Shows a bit of bottle age.  Barnyard, roses, and classic Pinot fruit flavors on the nose.  Quite powerful.  Utterly delicious once it hits your palate, a very big wine with taut tannins that carry through to a long finish, 60+ seconds.  Highly enjoyable.

Dark red / purple with a brilliant pink to clear rim.  The nose features intense, brambly ripe raspberry, black cherry, and wild blackberry seesawing back and forth with spicy black pepper, all under a soft layer of violets.  The deep, juciy fruit is accentuated on the palate by flavors of tar, and a hint of red grape skins.  Muscular & dense, the long finish sticks with you for 90+ seconds.

Medium ruby red with wide pink rim. A blockbuster nose full of dusty dark fruit and spice leads to a medium-bodied palate loaded with black fruits and cassis. This opened up exceptionally well with air, and I would cellar it for a few years to drink at its full potential. At under $20, this easily drinks like it's twice the price.

Classic Bordeaux.  This features a bright, dark shiny red color with a red rim.  The nose is full of earth, barnyard, and dark, ripe red fruits.  Very soft on the palate entry, this full bodied wine features flavors of cassis and dark fruit with a hint of smoke and oak.  Soft tannins make this easy to drink, delicious.

Inky goodness

I enjoyed this wine in a tasting of 5 2005 Red Bordeaux's.  This wine was more inky in color and rich in comparison to the others.  Reminded me of some Washington or California blends where the Cab Franc comes through, (L'Ecole 41's Perigee from 2004 in particular).  Some nice soft earth tones shone through.  Delicious.

Medium red, very milky and shiny.  Pretty nose of violets, dark flowers, and sweet berries a velvety, intoxicating quality that makes it a joy to swirl and sniff.  Palate has loads of juicy blackberry, blueberry, and currants, but is also surprisingly tannic with some wood on the finish.  In my opinion, this needs time.  Best after 2011.

Another great success from the Haut Brion Group. Earthy aroma of truffles, cedar and red berry. A deep opulent color, if you had never had the La Mission experience, it is one of the most dependable Stars of Bordeaux. Only bottles remain on sale at www.mndfinewine.com

One of the highlights of the Barrell Tastings in 2006, the entire Domaine Dillon was stellar. This is a monumental wine; a cornerstone of any serious cellar. I buy to enjoy and this is one of the most reliable purchases you can make. $349.00 per bottle at Bordeaux Specialist, www.mndfinewine.com

MONOPOLE FROM JADOT

Jadot must have acquired the Monopole of Volnay Clos de la Barre in 2005, because I remember other growers having the wine. Quite good, but I will retaste when the weather is cooler. No defects, but I want  it to rest a  few months. $34.99 at www.mndfinewine.com

This is great surprise. Very elegant and classy, rich minerality. I had not drunk a Savigny les Beaune from Jadot for quite a while. It is a Gagey Family property, and I can see why. Under $19. at www.mndfinewine.com

This wine (and this vintage perhaps?) is all about texture rather than power.  Very nice, with balanced cherry red fruits, acid, and alcohol.  Young now, this wine is already beautiful and will continue to develop in bottle.

Stunning & delicious.  My first 5 star review on Winezap (I think?).  Very clear with only a hint of color, there are lots of fresh squeezed lime notes on the nose that continue onto the palate.  Gorgeously balanced with a hint of wood (?) to add to the complexity, this was my favorite 2006 White Burgundy tasted this day.  Bravo.
