2006 - Vieille Ferme, La Cotes du Ventoux
Great value -
Nov 03, 2010
1 star 1 star 1 star 1 star
This is a "practically-free" offering from Rhone, France, composed of 50% Grenache, 20% Syrah, 15% Carignan and 15% Cinsault. In the glass, it is mid purple/red. Aromas are bold and purple-y. To the palate, there is a funky/sweet round middle full of bold flavors. Tannins are medium and help the lengthy finish. Four stars out of five. Screaming value at this ridiculously low price.More reviews at spiritofwine.blogspot.com.

Deep black plums
Nov 03, 2010
1 star 1 star 1 star
This value-based Rhone red wine is dark purple, almost opaque in the glass. On the nose, it's got a deep black plum aroma. The sip delivers an immediate blast of slightly fruit, sandpapery, chalky tannins to the roof of your mouth, cascading tight plum notes down the sides of your mouth. A bit of charcoal on the extracted, sparky finish. Interesting, needs time. 3 stars out of 5.More reviews at spiritofwine.blogspot.com.

2005 - Autard, Paul Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee La Cote Ronde
Counting on bigger things from its future
Nov 03, 2010
1 star 1 star 1 star
The Paul Autard Chateauneuf du Pape La Cote Ronde is a mid red in the glass. Aromas, moderately strong, speak of plums and dusty violet. On the palate, this comes across as young in its sandy tannins. They wrap a plummy, deep blackberry core. Full of stuffing. Plenty of time to sit and mature. Three stars now, with a plus because I'm counting on bigger things from it for the future.More reviews at spiritofwine.blogspot.com.

The nose was all exotic spices and black cherries. The palate reveals some silky and uber-ripened black cherries, black pepper, soy, cedar, vanilla and some crushed pebbles. That rich exotic quality is sure present through-out. A medium weight mouthfeel with some deftly balanced tannins, which were just slightly angular, and a moderate acid base. A long finish of 90+ seconds. This wine needs at least 5 more years to show itself as it was surely holding back about 50% of what I believe it could be: A wonderfully elegant but powerfully possessive character-filled Châteauneuf. It really has it all, it just needs to come together.

Medium red, very milky and shiny.  Pretty nose of violets, dark flowers, and sweet berries a velvety, intoxicating quality that makes it a joy to swirl and sniff.  Palate has loads of juicy blackberry, blueberry, and currants, but is also surprisingly tannic with some wood on the finish.  In my opinion, this needs time.  Best after 2011.

Pale golden yellow in color. Bright and fresh nose of creme brule, lemon curd, and quince with some straw aromas thrown in to let the drinker know it's Southern Rhone. Textured and viscous on the palate with some lemon custard and a distinct mineral component. Should age nicely over the short term. Very food friendly

2006 - Chapoutier Chateauneuf du Pape Barbe Rac

WOW.  Medium to light red with a pink rim, this wine entices with flavors of bright, sour cherry and some citrus peel on the nose.  The flavors explode out onto the palate, starting with red floral notes and heading into cherry cola and sweet cherry. Almost entirely Grenache, the Barbe Rac was aged first in oak and then in the bottle for 12 months. This is a dynamic standout wine whose flavors will only continue to emerge in years to come.

2007 - Delas Freres Cotes du Rhone St Esprit

Intense, dark purple core with a ruby and purple rim. The aromas are bright and rich with plum and blackberry fruits surrounded by toasted hazelnut, a smack of white pepper and a hint of scorched earth. Fruity and lush on the palate with intense wild blueberry surrounded by earth and white pepper. Medium bodied with great balance of fruit, acid and tannins. This is an incredibly easy wine to drink with a velvety smooth feel and a long, lingering finish with a flair of vanilla.
Delas has done it again, hands down producing one of the best values from France in years! 2007 is an outstanding vintage for the Rhone, and this is an impressively complex wine that packs a ton of flavors. Despite the complexity, it is restrained enough to sip by itself or match up with all kinds of foods from cheeses to pastas to a big juicy burger. The Delas Cotes du Rhone is always a great wine, but they have clearly outdone themselves this year. Grab several bottles now to have on hand for yourself and to impress any winos that may be coming to dinner. (If you buy a bottle, drop me a line and I'll be there tomorrow!)
A blend of 75% Syrah and 25% Grenache. This just started to hit the country, so if you don't see it in your local shop right away, ask for it and come back. They make a lot, so there's plenty to go around!

A Beast

This wine is absolutely one of the best paired with any grilled red meat. It can be cellared for several years to tame its beastiness. Get a case and save it, one of my favorites....

Again Interesting but...

...not my style for a good red table wine. On the nose there are aromas of burnt sugar, and a very earth and fire aspect marries the fruit component, with hints of flower notes to celebrate the occasion. Some will adore this, but still not for me.

Interesting - But Not My Style

This wasn't bad, it just wasn't my style. It has an immediate horsey character, very old-world style, as expected, with the typical sour cherry, some band-aid aroma, and a fresh smell like just-rinsed lettuce. Some will enjoy its vegetal components - but for me it's a pass.

Decent

Decent wine. The tannins in it were very pronounced,  leaving my mouth with a very astringent feel--and the wine is a wee bit "hot" with alcohol, but not too much so.  I was still able to taste the tart cherries/berries under the heat. But no matter. I did not decant, and it was still immediately quaffable.

Best of the bunch

This was the best vintage of this wine that I tasted.  I would definitely buy and drink this vintage again. It had a nose and taste of bright, ripe berries, the wine was medium bodied, and the juice had a nice acidity thing going on.  Overall I'd give it 4 stars if it had more umph.

New Old Style

This vintage has a nose of raspberry flavored sweaty socks. A little bit of metal. palate:sour cherries, some wood chips, nice tannins. A complete red wine experience.  If you like old world wines with new world fruit - this is the wine for you.

This vintage was good, but not really impressive enough to warrant 3 stars! It has medium body, dry red fruit, soft tannens and it  would be good with BBQ or spicy foods.

bad wine

It was just bad wine! Really awful-- I didn't get any fruit flavor, or any other flavors for that matter--this bottle tasted just like low-quality vinegar. Perhaps the bottle was tainted in some sort of way, but it did not smell corked. Very disappointed.

This has a very medium pale color, but vibrant. The nose is expressive of cherry, and the crushed stone, which I really enjoy. On the palate there is a great smooth integrated fruit/acid/tannin level. The cherries carry on as do the stones. Very elegant indeed. Finishes nicely.

This wine was really nice after a long day of work.  The sweet strawberries and nice currant flavors were sooo delicious! However, just like the white wine of this vintage, my favorite characteristic was the minerality of the wine.
