I always look for the bottle to say Napa Valley and be priced between $10-15 dollars. I found this wine to be a great tasting and smooth wine.

Blind and in Bed; Eroica Wine Lives Up to its Name

I like to drink my wines blind. In other words, I don’ t often read into the tasting notes or even the labels before going in and judging a wine based on what it tells me. Chateau Ste. Michelle’s Eroica Riesling was to be no exception.

After a bit in the fridge, I reached up to retrieve a wine glass from the cupboard and dug in the silverware drawer for the corkscrew. It amazed me that after years in the food service industry, I actually had to spend time looking for a wine key, but it was true and the task took longer than I would have liked. Finally, I managed to expel the cork.

A Healthy Splash of the Chateau Ste. Michelle’s in my Wine Glass.

This is where I went black out blind. I knew I had brought home a white, but completely forgot that it was a Riesling and so, as I held the glass up to the light in my kitchen, I found the light clear color was surprising while pleasing at the same time.

As I realized that I was indeed clueless as to what I was about to drink, I checked out the bottle and reminded myself that this bottle of wine was Chateau Ste. Michelle’s Riesling. Eroica is the fruit of a winemaking collaboration between Chateau Ste. Michelle’s Bob Bertheau and famed Mosel winemaker Ernst Loosen. It was all coming back to me.

Eroica, Erotica, Europa? It’s from Washington State??

The nose was very fresh and clear to me; void of sweet coyness, no honeys, but a cool mineral earthiness. With a Riesling, I expected the sweeter, but the ideal of the dry Riesling came to my mind. Like the color, the first mouthful caught me by surprise. It also was light and fresh, when I had thought to expect a thicker heavier feel. A bright hint of zest and spice exploded and was immediately followed by the cooling sweetness of Eroica. True to its nature, no one really could say it was a dry wine; it could only be a Dry Riesling and I was pleased that I opened it after dinner as the Sheppard’s Pie I made tonight would not have been spicy enough. Still, though, the Chateau Ste. Michelle held its own with a real drinkable delicious flavor. Eroica does not have a Wine Advocate Rating of 91 just based on a great sexy name.

Dinner was late tonight, so I carried my glass upstairs while putting the kids to bed. The glass lost some of the chill and the immediate reaction of spice on first sip faded with the fourth and fifth. More open now, yet still not a tease; Eroica continues to be honest and forthright with no apologies. It is said that a Riesling is so much more complicated than other wine varieties because it has both horizontal and vertical dimensions. Plus, it’s a variety that can be made in many different styles, from bone dry with high alcohol to moderately sweet with light alcohol, to lusciously sweet with very low alcohol. Eroica is pretty close to perfection.

A long dark narrow bottle. An attention grabbing name. A collaboration between two great winemakers; as I continued to taste this wine it all made sense.

Is Eroica a Wine for a Happy Ending Dessert?

While the say the wine was named for Beethoven’s Third Symphony, it’s still very close to a play on words I thought and laughed to myself. I imagined a non wine drinker enjoying the sweetness until it went to her head; would the wine live up to its name after a hot date?

I Laid in Bed and Drank Eroica

It was fitting. After dinner, a sophisticated wine that was tasty enough to keep drinking. I craved some chocolate cake; specifically a thick flourless chocolate torte with a dollop of thick crème fresh, but post Halloween, made due with Reese’s peanut butter cup.

Cutting through the uber sweetness of the candy, post bite the wine still held up. It was a risky endeavor since one would think the Riesling go flat after all that sugar, but it didn’t happen at all. Press on the wine claims that when crafting, the fruit goes direct to press after harvest, and then the juice is cool fermented to capture freshness and minerality. Those flavors come through strong. I could feel the citrus from the Mandarin and lime aromas and then the subtle mineral and slate flavors of the soil. Still delightful, to the finish which was now fruitful, leaving me with finally visions of perfectly crisp Granny Smith apples.

I gave a distinguished nod to Chateau Ste. Michelle for their dedication to the classic European wine varietals and fully enjoyed my Eroica even though my dear husband was now sound asleep and snoring next to me. The wine was to be my only happy ending that night.

2007 - Cuvaison Chardonnay Estate
Oct 28, 2009
1 star 1 star 1 star 1 star 1 star

On first look, the Cuvaison seemed to have certain lightness to it for a Chard. Often a Chardonnay will have a deeper, more golden color to it and maybe it was the sunlight in the yard, but it had a nice bright sunny color.

For me, the nose spoke of honey. Other tasting notes call for more of a crème brûlée, custard, vanilla, caramel, crème fraiche or buttered apple aromas, so there is a definite creamy, rich sweetness there.  Tasting itself, the forward feel is that buttery sweeter goodness, but then the Cuvaison is surprisingly bright and crisp. It was very refreshing and not at all too heavy at all.  I found that the creaminess gave way to a pleasant citrus, mostly lemon, maybe a bit of grapefruit? It most certainly had a forward citrus fruit, though other tasting notes for this Chardonnay call for crisp apple, melon, caramel, Meyer lemon custard, pineapple. Bottom line: it’s got a nice light fruit feel to it with that buttery creamy balance.

After the fruit, the finish held on, but not too to long. Some oak as expected, but not at all too rough. It was much smoother than expected and very balanced.  It was all too pleasant, sitting in the crisp fall sun, drinking this bright and crisp wine with friends and talking about the sensations that were happening as we sipped.  If I had planned better, a tray of fruit, cheese and crackers would have made it complete, though a nice clam bake would have done just as well too!

All and all, one of the best Chardonnays I have had in a while and I am looking forward to drinking it again.  An added bonus? It’s one of our top wine picks this week and is one sale from it’s regular price.

30 minute quadruple splash decant. Dark and brooding. The nose is fragrant with black cassis notes, black cherries, and crème de kirsch. The palate has a silky and pure mouthfeel that is lush and elegant. Totally open for business. There is the crème de kirsch with some cocoa, black currants, black cherries, super black plums and pomegranate. Amazing intricately weaved tannins with a lilthy acidic 'bounce'. A very long and poignant finish that goes minutes, not second. A fantastic showing indeed. No rush, but no need to postpone enjoyment either.

76% cab, 12% merlot, 9% cab franc, 3% petite verdot.. Time treats these Gemstones well. The last time I had this it was nice, but surely not monumental. Today, 4 years later it has added weight and class, but more importantly, structure.
A very deep and dark reddish black color, this was very fragrant on the nose: cassis, flowers, and black cherries. On the palate there is a very concentrated mouth feel that I don’t really remember this having previous time while sampling. Great structure with some great lushness. The black fruit profile is my playground. Great black currant, plums, blackberries with some kirsch notes, tar, and a hint of soy. A bit of leather and a hint of cedar box. The tannins are still noticeable but did not negatively affect his showing on ounce. It was decanted 4 hours (I believe), which surely was advantageous in this showing. A real elegant classy and uber balanced wine, with a long creamy smooth finish.

Decanted 3+ hours. A very classic cabernet, and not in the best of ways.
Dark and dense, the nose showed absolutely nothing save for a slight note of cassis, very ungiving indeed.
The palate had some ‘iron grip old Cali Cab’ stylings. Realizing these need decades and not just years, we continued on anywho. All correct black fruits of currant and blackberries with some hints of leather, tar, & coffee beans. The tannins clobber and the clunky feel never really dissipates. The mouth feel is mid weight and the finish admirable.
A very correct wine if one wants to just drink correct wines. I don’t. I want show and schnizzle, so the implied flaw in this case may be a byproduct of the taster and not the wine. My score may not be fair, but a 89 seems about right to me tonight.

(1 hour double decant) had full throttle rich red & black fruits, a nice purity and a fullness-lushness I always appreciate. A touch of alcohol in the very end, but its an obvious baby. No travel or bottling shock in sight. This had a very different flavor profile than any of the previous 3 vintages: Maybe a bit redder and less cassis based while being less showy. This bottle was also less tannin driven. It's complex and pure and will be an earlier drinker in my estimation, unless it stiffens up with more bottle age. One that I may think would deliver for the next bunch of years and I may not necessarily hide it behind my 05s.---In all fairness, it is not fair to judge these so young. I appreciate the oppurtunity to do so and in reading my note now want to add this addendum: More bottle age? Compared to what, 20 minutes? This could and surely will gain weight with time in the bottle and should be a beauty upon release.

(30 minute decant) showed wonderfully. Coming right after the Maybach, it had some great balance, structure and roundness being just a teeny bit short on the finish (initally). Sitting in the glass for 15 minutes opened this up and lengthened the finish out nicely. Pure blackberries, a hint of creme de cassis, and some lead pencil shavings. Great dense and lush mouthfeel while not being a head banger. Glad I have more and although I can't give last nights bottle another 99, I consider it still up there in my wine-o-memory bank as one that satisfies.

This was served blind---Very typical in the sense of, 'yes I am Napa cabernet'. Great cassis & backberry filled palate with some secondaries. I thought it reminded me of a 2001 Napa, and was happy to see at unveil that it was a '99, a vintage that I usually got more austerity from. This was a quiet elegant fulfilling cabernet that wore its bloodline on its sleeve. Funny thing is I liked this one much better than the '01 I had at the beginning of the year. Drinking beautifully this one is.

6 hour decant. Deep ruby color. The nose is pure crème de cassis and kirsch royal. The palate reveals a nice pure sweet red & black fruit profile, and not the bad sweet type I detest. Great black cherry, black currant, cherry cola, pomegranate, with some soy, soil, and lead pencil shavings. This has a lushness not normally associated with wines at this price point. A medium to full bodied mouth feel that is long, elegant, and beautifully structured. The tannins are on the biggish side and a few years in the cellar will most certainly reward the owner. A creamy extended finish completes the package. I wanted to try this as I seen the Jones website still offering me more. I ordered 6 more. One of my favorite list purchases and one to surely keep on.
A QPR in its class.

Super deep and dark as usual, this one needs a minimum of 1-2 hours to really show itself. Great creme de kirsch and cola on the nose. The palate has chewy black and dark red fruits of currant, blackberry and black plum pudding. The mouhfeel is plush and elegant. A wonderful balanced wine, this has all the hallmarks of a full-breed Napa cabernet, at half the price. The tannins are intricately weaved and spun to help create the great mouthfeel. The finish is a minute plus, and the fruit never quits.

Further proof that when you order Frank Family, you will not be disappointed. The fruit is pure Napa, with a nose that makes you want to dive into the glass and swim around in it. The finish is long and balanced, with just the right amount of oak. Frank has access to some of Napa's finest fruit and a winemaker that apparently can do it justice.

Beauty nose but needs some coaxing.  Clear ruby color, not too dark.  Palate opens with balanced fruit and a classy spicy finish brings it home.  Some minerality adds interest.  Very french in style but with the generous CA fruit.  With air some tobacco notes emerge on the nose.  Oak is in the background.  I only noticed the alcohol after repeated sips.  Remarkable second wine!

The blend of unoaked chardonney and riesling gives this a very fruit forward, yet crisp finish.  Great with summer foods or just sitting on the beach contemplating the end of the day.  The lack of national distribution and limited states they can ship to restricts this pleasure to those who can get to the winery in northern Virginia and "drink naked" -- as it says on the cork.

A fine white, smooth with no after bite or after taste on the palate, with hints of nada--- no peaches no fruit,  it's fine with exotic  spicy Thai or Japanese  fusion cuisine or your favorite sushi and sashimi, linguine with clams in a white sauce or Cajun Style,  Four-Cheese Fettucine Alfredo with shrimp.  Goes well with a steak for those who are not slaves to the red or white wine convention. An excellent choice  to compliment a Philly Cheese Steak Hoagie served up  in those little towns in the Thousand Islands region of  Eastern Ontario (Canada) which make their own cheeses.  A delightful companion  to a  toasted pastrami & provolone & tomato fast food submarine/hero shoppe sandwich when  adorned with black olives and banana peppers.

Delightful mouthfeel, delicate smooth texture.  I really can't belive a wine this good is available off the shelf at your local chain supermarket (in Montana, anyway.)  Buy it by the case if you can.
