2006 - Lail Vineyards Georgia Sauvignon Blanc
forget New Zealand, forget Sancerre: this beats Carbonnieux

Sauvignon Blanc has the most amazing spectrum, ranging from tangy Sancerre and NZ, to fruity Italian, to classic and massive.  Up to now, classic and massic meant Graves.  Now Lail Georgia (and its little sister, Blueprint, with a lighter touch) demonstrate that Sauvignon Blanc California can be a massive white.  Chateau Montelena chardonnay beat French Burgundy in the 1970s; Georgia does it for sauvignon blanc 30 years later.

Unique CA Sauvignon Blanc

This wine fooled me as when I tasted it blind I would have never guessed this to be Sauvignon Blanc.  On the nose I get a lot of Banana, Pear, Green Apple, and Cinnamon.  There is also some nice rocky minerality, and a touch of new oak.  This was obviously fermented  aged in new oak barrels for at some point in its life.  This is a big, rich SB but still has some decent acidity. Good, but not great. If you are looking for a Rombauer alternative this would be right up your alley!

Classy Napa Sauvignon Blanc

A classic Sauvignon Blanc from a consistent producer in Napa.  This wine has a brilliant pale straw color.  The nose has a pleasant grassy, gooseberry, lemon oil notes.  On the palate bright citrus fruits including grapefruit and tangerine.  This wine finishs very clean with plenty of acidity and a crisp finish.  Reminds me very much of a top notch NZ SB.  91-92 points

Kind of blows all your preconceived notions about Sauvignon Blanc out of the water. I love that it doesn't evaporate as soon as you swallow, and it's surprisingly good with food. Fruity, aromatic and a really balanced full note from start to finish. Not what you expect from this California fruit, but definitely worth it for trying something new.

This was a very dry and crisp version of Sav Blanc. It tasted like a grassy meadow in the morning mist with a mixture of fruit: peach, grapefruit, and kiwi. An odd soda aspect coming through as well - that's just weird. But overall not bad.

unique, but not my style

A little too much skin contact may be to blame, but there is a pencil lead in the nose that shouldn't be there. Other than that, lush tropical fruit and great acidity make this a great first effort. Hopefully next year they will just press and run with the free run.

This was another great vintage.  A nice sauvignon blanc but at the price point there are much better. Nearly clear in appearance witha flowery, citrus and gooseberry on the nose. Dry in the mouth with good acidity.

Good - not Great

This vintage has passed it's prime but it still has some interesting components. I even note a slight stony/chalky note on the nose and flavors. I think I would really liked this alot if the fruit had not faded so much.  Try later vintages.  Great producer.

We had this vintage a week ago actually and it has really held up on the fruit. Also has very nice aromas grass, grapefruit lime peels. The acidity is sharp but not overboard and has attack of citrus (lemons, limes, grapefruit) some kiwi.

This was another crisp vintage, with smooth fruit and a good finish. It was also very green - grassy and somewhat underripe fruit (in a good way). Some slight mineral components that make me very happy.

This was a very pleasant vintage, that was easy to drink. Overall it was an enjoyable white with the expected citrus punch and an overall clean flavor. If there is no red, pass me a bottle of this white.

This wine isn't anything to be ashamed about but then again I wouldn't write home about it. It was difficult enough to muster up the drive to write here and now about it. Not very impressive. Then again, I'm more new world in my white wines and this may be a more old world style. I dunno...if anyone wants to comment, please do. Crisp apple and light oak.

This is somewhat better than the chardonnay that they produce, but still not worth your time.  The fruit is weak pineapple and grapefruit, smoothered with fake vanilla oak.  Alcohol too high as well.

nice deep straw color. Great balance. Some lemon and floral notes. No signs of age. Ultra pure and super enjoyable. A great example of an 11 year old sauvignon blanc.

This was a simple wine I had at a tasting, that didn't seem to really impress anyone in my group.  Having said that, it delivers your moneys worth or pretty close to it.  Clean and Crisp but a little too light.

Opened at a picnic. Oak was not that overpowering as b4. Passion fruit, nice balance. Coats your mouth.  It's not bad, but I think I prefer New Zealand Sauv. Blancs.

This wine was a good surprise.  The oak is hidden under good fruit and nice structure.  I would serve this to a group of friends on a warm summer night right before we had seafood.

Okay this isn't earth-shattering, but it is a nice, crisp SB not overly acidic, widely available in restaurants and nicely accompanies a range of shellfish, and goes well with oysters particularly at least in the experience of my wife and I. There would be others I might choose, but often I am not given that choice.
