2007 - Dain Wines Syrah The Smart Set, White Hawk Vineyard

1 star 1 star 1 star 1 star 1 star

If there had been a single best $20 STEAL avalable ANYWHERE. I would like to try it. Until then, I say this is possibly the best deal I have made all year (And I made some good deals).

Medium garnet in color, the nose is all white pepper, forest floor, cranberries, cherries, and pomegranate, all intense. All in balance. The palate reveals a lush mouth feel of cranberry, pomegranate, Bing cherries, red plums, raspberries, fresh grated white pepper, wild lowers and wow. The balance is incredible. Perfect acidic conveyor belt whisping this forward to nirvana.
Unbef-ingbelievable. A super long finish and Dain's your uncle. (95 pts.)

Very dark red with a shiny pink rim.  Thick, sweet, and fruit on the nose with elements of white pepper, cured meats, mushroom, spice, blueberries, liquer, and a touch of plum.  The palate explodes with pepper & sweet tea.  At 16.1% alcohol I thought the finish would be much hotter than it is, but it helps give it a tremendous length.

Deep dark ruby core with a dull red rim. Aromas of saddle leather, all-spice, and cardamom followed by dark cherry, chocolate, and citrus zest. Earthy on the mid-palate with some truffle, candied red fruits, and dried herbs. Medium finish

Tasted blind.  Medium-dark red with a pink rim.  Some purple tones with lots of spicy, crackling pepper.  Some stemmy flavors on the palate (showing its youth) with good earth.  Very nice!

An amazing dark purple.  And I mean DARK and I mean PURPLE.  Ripe fruit with incredible concentration, it took a lot of swirling to get that white pepper to come out.  Soft on the palate with deep blackberry fruit.  Highly recommended.

Very dark red with dark pink rim.  Loads of pepper, blackberries, spice rub, and spoke with some beautiful dark flower aromas on the nose.  Soft on the palate with red and dark fruits, this wine evolved over the couple hours I tasted it.  Quite delicious and highly recommended.

Super bright pinkish red color to a clear rim. Medium aromas of dark cherry and blackberry with no real noticeable spice or pepper, which I guess makes sense for the Dry Creek Valley. Medium dark cherry and blackberry flavors continue onto the palate with some added chocolate and some plum on the finish. Nice and balanced. (0 views)

I am a big syrah fan and this wine did not disappoint especially for the price.  This wine has a dark ruby color that is almost purple.  The nose is loaded with pure ripe black fruits, almost like smelling a basket of fresh blackberries in the summertime.  This wine is clearly very young and will definitely get better with a bit of age.  On the palate blackberry, raspberry, bacon, and herbs. The wine coats your mouth and has ripe, sweet tanins.  If you are a fan of Saxum and big reds like that this will surely please.

This wine has a deep, dark ruby color and a slightly lighter ruby rim.  On the nose subtle notes of of blackberry, casis, lavender, pine and licorice.  Once in the mouth bright black fruits, a bit of bananna, a stony, rocky component and a slight touch of oak This has a medium plus to long finish that is clean and pure.  A great value from a consistent producer.

Very Dark Purple almost inky in color.  A very pretty nose of Blackberry, Violet, Blueberry, and Lavender.  This wine is very young and looks like it has the potential to age well based on the wines acidity.  On the palate copius amounts of black fruits and a nice smoky, meaty, character.Nice!

9998 - Unti Vineyards Syrah Petit Frere
Little Brother isn't sure of his parentage
Jun 24, 2008
1 star 1 star 1 star
Unti Vineyards admits these are young vines, and yes, the wine is named Little Brother. A Chateauneuf de pape blend of Grenache (42%), Mourvedre (10%), and Syrah (52%), Petit Frere needs some growing up to do. As fitting young, newly grafted vines, the resulting wine is not terribly complex. It had a bit too much acidity for this taster's preferences and I didn't find it very "round" as promised on the label. The acidity and off-kilter balance made it seem sharp and rough, like a cheap local barrel French wine. It was not bad per se, I just couldn't help think someone else might have been able to make a better wine out of the same mix. The nose promised more than the taste delivered. The syrah seemed weak and so the grenache dominated-all the better notes came from the grenache profile: baked cherries, rhubarb, licorice. A decent bottle but there are better spanish garnaches and better Aussie GSM's for less money. It smoothed out a little with some time and some food to paired with it, but this never got past being just OK.

A friend gave this to me as a gift - it was awesome! Beautiful blueberry aroma with lots of graphite and other mineral notes, dusty rocks, caramel, ginger, and obvious cedar tones. A wonderfully aromatic nose and an even better palate! Drink this wine everyday if you can afford it!

Lovely Syrah

This was a very good syrah. It has beautiful color. Initial vegetal aromas on the nose but that blew off after about 30 mins revealing some red fruit. Very faint strawberry and cranberry with some sour cherry on the palate. Nicely balanced wine that is a great value. Great sipper.

Better with Age

Better with age indeed! This wine has a totally opaque red color. The aroma features pepper, spices, smoke, hickory, wood, truffles, and blackberries... it's like an aroma you would want in your house. The taste is very spicy, with black plums and berries. It's also very warm and dry and perfect for meat. This is a very fun wine that has softened with age and is ready for drinking

Disappointed

Too many other wines like this one and this one really disappoints. This wine was all around disappointing. Not bad, just disappointing. On the nose, smells like red licorice. A lot. Can taste some strawberry, plum and lots of spice, but nothing extraordinary on the palate.  The taste couldn't deliver what the nose brought.

I didn't.  Too green and lacking the fruit character that I enjoy in California Syrah. This wine smells of raisins and plums with a bit of herbs. The taste is thick and acidic, has a bit of plum and green pepper, as well as tannin. It's slightly sweet but still very dry.

Alcohol kills it.
Jun 09, 2008

Take the alcohol down a notch and this is a 4 star wine perhaps. Overripe raspberries and chocolate on the nose give way to raspberry ganache and ruby port on the palate and finish, where it turns a little hot. This wine fades quickly in the glass, and the alcohol begins to dominate.

Great but Light

Another lighter style syrah with bright cherry flavors and smooth finish. If you like big boys then this is a pass. But if you like finese - buy a case! I would think this wine would remain great for several years, but it is certainly showing a lot right now.
