2006 - Guillaume Gros, Domaine Cotes du Luberon El Nino Loco
Deep black plums
Nov 03, 2010
1 star 1 star 1 star
This value-based Rhone red wine is dark purple, almost opaque in the glass. On the nose, it's got a deep black plum aroma. The sip delivers an immediate blast of slightly fruit, sandpapery, chalky tannins to the roof of your mouth, cascading tight plum notes down the sides of your mouth. A bit of charcoal on the extracted, sparky finish. Interesting, needs time. 3 stars out of 5.More reviews at spiritofwine.blogspot.com.

2005 - Autard, Paul Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee La Cote Ronde
Counting on bigger things from its future

The Paul Autard Chateauneuf du Pape La Cote Ronde is a mid red in the glass. Aromas, moderately strong, speak of plums and dusty violet. On the palate, this comes across as young in its sandy tannins. They wrap a plummy, deep blackberry core. Full of stuffing. Plenty of time to sit and mature. Three stars now, with a plus because I'm counting on bigger things from it for the future.More reviews at spiritofwine.blogspot.com.

9998 - Krug Grande Cuvee
Golden yeasty, musty.
Nov 03, 2010
1 star 1 star 1 star
The 160+ year old House of Krug constructs this multi-vintage Champagne Krug Brut Grande Cuvee. In the glass, this Krug is golden in color. There is a slow, percolating flow of bubbles. Aromas are deep, rich, with a golden yeasty musty aroma. On the palate, there is a round aromatic feel, smooth and funky, with a visit by very ripe melons. It is a round sensation, but lifted by sweet, full acids. It sports an even, lengthy finish. Three stars out of five.More reviews at spiritofwine.blogspot.com.

1999 - Moet Chandon Dom Perignon
Dry citrus in style, with effervescence.
Nov 03, 2010
1 star 1 star
Moet and Chandon has been at the Dom Perignon game for over 70 years, and here we're trying the 1999 vintage. In the glass, you notice a light yellow tone with a slight golden hue. The vista is interrupted by a single strand of fast moving bubbles. Aromas are of yeasty lemon. On the palate, effervescence is the first note. The overall feel is dry, with acids moving up the side of your mouth. Dry citrus in style, with a relatively brief finish. I didn't see the stuffing that would suggest long additional aging potential, though I'm clearly outvoted by the experts on this assessment. I'm giving two stars because, although the experience was pleasant enough, I wasn't drawn back to another experience. A plus is added for the delicate balance. But, all in all, in the Champagne category, I am drawn more to the Duval-Leroy Brut NV, at a significantly lower price point. I realize this review won't win friends, but it's just how I see it.More reviews at spiritofwine.blogspot.com.

Plummy, dark red. Spicy cedar on a sweet fruity with an interesting cologne  aroma. Lively and clean on the palate with good grip and a medium length.  Drinking much better the following day.

The nose was all exotic spices and black cherries. The palate reveals some silky and uber-ripened black cherries, black pepper, soy, cedar, vanilla and some crushed pebbles. That rich exotic quality is sure present through-out. A medium weight mouthfeel with some deftly balanced tannins, which were just slightly angular, and a moderate acid base. A long finish of 90+ seconds. This wine needs at least 5 more years to show itself as it was surely holding back about 50% of what I believe it could be: A wonderfully elegant but powerfully possessive character-filled Châteauneuf. It really has it all, it just needs to come together.

This opened with a beautiful bouquet of Spring flowers after the rains. The nose was succulent and alluring. Great structure and finesse with a medium body mouthfeel. Wonderful freshness and vibrancy showed its class. Some exotic citrus notes, and a hint of sweetness, maybe a half a hint. A fine interweaving of silky tannins and lithey acid level carries this all the way through to a long lush finish. A very intoxicating and well balanced wine indeed. Brent got some oxidation on this. I did not. Thank you Eric for offering up such a great bottle. The first surprise of a 2 surprise night. (95 pts.)

Dark, dense, opaque red to cherry red rim.  Dusty nose full of spice, soft blackberry and cherry fruit with a touch of oak, menthol, and some eucalyptus.  Soft entry onto the palate , this medium-bodied wine features flavors of cherry and blackberry carried through to the medium length finish by a hint of mint, dried tobacco, and a touch of dried herbs.  Shows great balance between acid, tannins, and alcohol. Drink now - 2015

Medium to dark red with a clear rim.  Shows a bit of bottle age.  Barnyard, roses, and classic Pinot fruit flavors on the nose.  Quite powerful.  Utterly delicious once it hits your palate, a very big wine with taut tannins that carry through to a long finish, 60+ seconds.  Highly enjoyable.

Dark red / purple with a brilliant pink to clear rim.  The nose features intense, brambly ripe raspberry, black cherry, and wild blackberry seesawing back and forth with spicy black pepper, all under a soft layer of violets.  The deep, juciy fruit is accentuated on the palate by flavors of tar, and a hint of red grape skins.  Muscular & dense, the long finish sticks with you for 90+ seconds.

Medium ruby red with wide pink rim. A blockbuster nose full of dusty dark fruit and spice leads to a medium-bodied palate loaded with black fruits and cassis. This opened up exceptionally well with air, and I would cellar it for a few years to drink at its full potential. At under $20, this easily drinks like it's twice the price.

Classic Bordeaux.  This features a bright, dark shiny red color with a red rim.  The nose is full of earth, barnyard, and dark, ripe red fruits.  Very soft on the palate entry, this full bodied wine features flavors of cassis and dark fruit with a hint of smoke and oak.  Soft tannins make this easy to drink, delicious.

Inky goodness

I enjoyed this wine in a tasting of 5 2005 Red Bordeaux's.  This wine was more inky in color and rich in comparison to the others.  Reminded me of some Washington or California blends where the Cab Franc comes through, (L'Ecole 41's Perigee from 2004 in particular).  Some nice soft earth tones shone through.  Delicious.

Medium red, very milky and shiny.  Pretty nose of violets, dark flowers, and sweet berries a velvety, intoxicating quality that makes it a joy to swirl and sniff.  Palate has loads of juicy blackberry, blueberry, and currants, but is also surprisingly tannic with some wood on the finish.  In my opinion, this needs time.  Best after 2011.
