2004 - Whitehaven Sauvignon Blanc
Too geen

This vintage was off the path from the last few.  I would have to say pass on this particular vintage if you are not a vegetable lover. Dominated by green pepper, it also has some grapefruit and cat pee. Very sharp on the palate . The green pepper is too strong for me.

Value!

Great value that delivers again. It has explosive grapefruit on the nose (more pink really). I love the spritz on the palate. You get a great pure rush of kiwi, pineapple, lime, gooseberry, and green apple. Very tangy and acidic but not overly so. Everything is in nice balance. The score would be much higher if the flavors would just stay longer. Great Value!

Good Wine but not complex
Jun 09, 2008

This is another good wine from Whitehaven. The nose on this wine is citrus, and the taste follows suit. Grapefruit is the predominant taste, and can be overwhelming if one doesn't love grapefruit. It is inoffensive in taste, and the crisp fruitiness makes up for the short finish. I would recommend it to those who like crisp, cool, fruity wines. If you're looking for a strong, complex wine, however, look elsewhere.

Easy to drink

It's easy to drink. It had a pale yellow, clear color. I got mostly grapefruit, hint of pineapple, celery on the nose. Taste: grapefruit start switching to lemon. Finished with lemon and pepper. I liked this wine. I found it interesting and thought provoking, very fresh. I would recommend it!

Best of the Bunch

This is the best vintage I've had. An excellent vintage for this wine. It had a vibrant limestone and crab-apple combination.  I would probably give it 3.5 and would love to give it four stars, but I still felt the acidity wasn't quite balanced. Regardless, it was a very good New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc worthy of buying again.

Good Value

This is a good value but needs to be consumed now. Overall it's a fine wine that has a wonderful sense of strength lacking in many competitors. The nose is magnificent, and can be had alone or with a meal.

Too Old

This wine was once good, but now it's over the hill--has no nose, taste, or soul anymore, only the acid remains. I think that I will go ahead and pour it out. I had it before when it was in its prime, and it was so aromatic and so lively on the tongue!

Another Miss

This was the last year of the vertical that we tasted and it was more of the same: lighter then you would like to see and just an overall disappointment. The lack of finish and unfocused fruit make this wine a total pass.  I wonder how these wines were stored also.

Better but not Good enough

This vintage doesn't deliver either. It was pretty much just another Pinot Noir. It was fine to drink, pleasant enough, but overall unremarkable. If it was less expensive it'd be a good standby to keep on hand, but given the price I don't think I'll be bothering to purchase it again.

Off Wine

This wine is just off, it is very basic and quite light without much structure. After it is decanter it develops a bitter after taste. Acid, not smooth. The fruit is so light that I can't even pinpoint the flavors.

Fruit Forward

This is nice fruit forward wine that is easy to drink and easy on the wallet.  If you like Kim Crawford, thrn this is the wine for you and cheaper. Overall the oak is a little bit annoying on the finish but the apple and pear flavors are lovely.

Fruit Forward

I could copy the review of the 2007 wine for this one.  Fruit forward Melons, grapefruit and orange peel are the main focus on the palate, surrounded by nice, soft oak whichs is so well integrated with the fruit, you hardly notice it.

Solid Stuff

I think consistant is the best term for this wine.  I will also say, that if you don't like this fruit forward style of Sauvignon Blanc, then don't bother with any vintage - because it's all very similar.  Fruit forward melons, starfruit, kiwi and grapefruit.

Not for Me

Everyone but me loved this wine at the dinner with friends.  They all hated the other wine the Kim Crawford but I loved it.  This is the anti-wine to that wine.  Light fruit and grass.

This was an unbelievable wine that we had at a dinner with friends.  I don't know why I loved it soooo much but the fruit was incredible and it was sooo easy to drink. Immediately I bought a case.

NEW ZEALAND SAYS HELLO!

I really enjoyed this pinot from the Kiwi's.  Overall it had a wonderful structure and good balance to the wine.  The earthy undertones carry the strawberry and raspberry fruit all the way down your throat.  Earthier style will either make you love this wine or hate it. I loved it as a nice change of pace! Decant for at least an hour.

Nice Pinot noir but could be more with earth, berries, a bit CA like,   maybe i should have had this when I got it or maybe it's in a dumb phase. I'll try another one in a year or 2.

very simple, good Qpr considering my fave was Kim Crawford which is now $18 or more, so I'm looking for cheap Sauv Blancs for the summer.  I think I could find something better tho.

It's sooooo over the top, but I still love it.  The wine has beautiful fruit that covers your entire palate with melons, grapefruit, starfruit, lemon, and even some hints of pineapple.  This will turn a lot of people away for being to over the top on the fruit and coming across as sweet - but I love it!

Good everyday white
May 27, 2008

Archetypical New Zealand sauvignon with aromas of grapefruit, grass and a slight whiff of cat urine. Decent acidity profile and nice long finish elevate this wine beyond the ordinary NZ sauvignon blanc and make it a good candidate for an everyday house wine.
