So a lot has been said (written) about Chateauneuf du Pape recently... There has been a string of excellent vintages (omit 2002) 2001, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, and now 2007...  I've tasted a lot of 03s, 05s, and 06s... What vintage do people prefer and why?

I really like to concentration and supple nature of the 2003s (Sabon, Tardieu Laurent, Clos des Papes) Whereas, the power and tannin of the 05s is a little much at this young stage. I've enjoyed a lot of 06s because they are pretty much open for business despite being a year younger than the 06s

Thoughts? Favorite Producers? Vintages?

My personal favorite id th 98s..They are starting to show really well now.

But from the vintages you have listed I have only tasted the 04 and 05

Both of which I loved..Though probably still too young..

I thought both vintages were fruit concentrated and the Grenache really excelled.

I love the 04 Vieux Telegraph..and the Vieux Donjon...

And I am always a big fan of Beaucastel.

I totally agree with everyone!  98 was an astonishing year and anytime I see some around, I tend to get it.  Recently had some M. Chapoutier Barbe Rac 1998 and wow!  Otherwise, I am really a fan of beaucastel which is layered, complex, and never ending.  The price is also amazing.  If you look hard, you can find 2004 and 2005 beaucastel for 50-60 a bottle.

I also agree, the 98's are drinking very well now.  I like the 04's and 06's now too.  I haven't actually tried any of my 05's yet, thought I'd give them alittle more time.  But I will say that I think the 05 Cote du Rhone's are really good and most of them still seem to be a pretty good value.

I haven't tried any CdP from 07 yet, but if the Delas Cotes du Rhone St Esprit is any hint of the quality from the south, they are going to be absolutely smoking. The Delas has unbelievable intensity and complexity for a "simple" Cotes du Rhone.

Another Cotes du rhone that is smokin' is the Veielle Julienne Cotes du Rhone Lieu dit Clavin. I think the 06 is $20 or so and well worth it... Parker says it drinks like a more expensive Chateauneuf du pape
