2000 - Turley Cellars Zinfandel Juvenile Zinfandel

Intoxicating nose of Italian spices

Apr 08, 2008
1 star 1 star 1 star 1 star
Intoxicating nose of Italian spices, forest floor, alcohol and sweat socks. Rich mouthfeel with spice and alcohol--almost no tannins. Finishes a little bitter. Overall an enjoyable experience but it burns a little hot at 15.2% alcohol. I was thinking this vintage was at the end of its term but after tonight's 2 bottles, it probably has another year or 2 of prime years.

A lot of typical Marcassin characteristics. Nose of warm oak. Rich, silky body, medium oak and a little metallic. Great with the chilled shrimp.

Aubert produces the best California chardonnay

Apr 08, 2008
1 star 1 star 1 star 1 star 1 star
Aubert produces the best California chardonnay and this did not disappoint. It's consistently better than Kistler and Peter Michael of any vineyard. The color is a crystal clear golden yellow. Refined on the palate with a symphonic blend of almonds, citrus, oak and minerals. Still has a few more peaks years.

Dusty, muted fruit, blackberries and a bit of cedar.

Drank along side a 70 and 82 Petrus. Decanted one hour. Dusty, muted fruit, blackberries and a bit of cedar. A shadow of its former self and clearly showing its age. Probably would have been better 5 years ago. Still, enjoyed it over the 70 Petrus.

Bring it on!

Bring it on! Though still quite young, this wine is terrific. It's loaded with fruit and charisma--though not of the over-extracted Aussie type. This is refined and precise. Open the next bottle in 2009.

Popped and poured. This wine was exceptional--even with pizza and stromboli. It offers a huge range of flavors and nuances in relatively light-bodied wine. Notes of nutmeg, cedar, cinnamon and roast meats. In its prime or just past the peak.

Spectacular. It's pretty close to a perfect Bordeaux. Silky tannins, powerful, seductive and layers of black fruit. A bit of smoke and graphite. It probably has another 10 years of bottle life.

Lots of lemon.

Lots of lemon. Oak and a little sweetness round off the experience. Ok aparatif but better with food. It probably has just 1 or 2 more good drinkable years.

This is an awesome wine. Popped and poured and enjoyed with Indian food. Candied nuts nose. It's quite light in the glass. Palate is sweet but nicely balanced with fruit and citric acid. Finish is quick and a slightly acidic fruit lingers. A real pleasure to drink and nothing stops you from just pouring and drinking and pouring and drinking.... Has at least another 8 years of cellar life.

Easy to drink and a shadow of its former self.

Color is deep cranberry--thin and suprisingly clear. Palate is essentially tannin-free. There's dried fruit, a little cedar and it's pretty simple. Easy to drink and a shadow of its former self.

The color is cloudy and medium. You can easily see through it in the glass. Earthy, cola, baking spices and cedar on the palate--very nice. It's a bit hot which is the only disappointing feature. I don't think it's going to improve much more in the bottle.

Pepper in the nose.

Pepper in the nose. Pepper, extracted fruit, campfire, gasoline and roasted root vegetables. I like how it starts off strong and in your face and then calms down in the finish. Should age nicely over the next 5 years.

High viscosity and a deep yellow in the glass

Apr 07, 2008

A heavy chardonnay. High viscosity and a deep yellow in the glass. Palate is velvety smooth with notes of vanilla, peat, honey and cut grass. Drank with stone crabs and it was a little too heavy. Probably better with a creamed based soup, an oily fish or veal.

Poured straight from a 375ml. Musty, old leather, mushrooms, wet leaves. Olives in the finish. Fruit has faded a lot but it's still quite enjoyable. A little time in the glass kills much of what's going on. Decanting not recommended.

For a Burgundy that should be over the hill it's drinking nicely. Crystal clear and very light ruby color. Poured straight from the bottle but with a little glass time it really started to show its stuff. Quite fruity and approachable. Has notes of cranberry cocktail with a twist of lemon.

Tannins have all faded away. Very nicely integrated and smooth. Velvety and pleasurable to drink. On the (very) tail end of maturity and I would have enjoyed it more 5 years ago but still a nice treat.

Really nice burgundy. The palate is a little astringent but once the acid fades, the long finish reveals baking spices and light fruit.
