2006 - Moulin-a-Vent, Chateau  Bordeaux Blend

Beaujolais on Steroids, in a good way.

One of my "first" wines was a California Gamay- Beaujolais, (many magnums ago...).  Old tastes die hard I guess.  I like this wine.  It was nicely fruity, but not without structure and a slightly dryer finish.  This is a great BBQ wine, it goes well with almost any smokey/spicey dish, or just drink it solo, slightly chilled.

2005 - Penfolds Shiraz Bin 128 Syrah

Good, sturdy, dependable Shiraz from down under.

This wine is what you would expect from a BIG Australian vineyard.  Nice dark red color tinged with purple.  Plums and spice on the nose.  Chewy berry jam on the palate, and a touch of white pepper on the finish.  We drank this bottle with a nicely underdone steak.

I drank this wine at a wine tasting dinner at one of my favorite restaurants.  This wine was a new world style Pinot with great flair and class.  It was light, bright, and delicious.  Great sparkling ruby red color, berries on the nose, strawberry/currant on the tongue, and a really clean finish.  I was surprised by how much I liked this wine, it was nicely balanced, good acidity and fruit.  Easy to drink.

A superlative Pinot Noir.

My husband and I shared this bottle of wine in a restaurant.  He's the Pinot drinker.  I would convert if all Pinots were as good as this one!  First the color, gorgeous ruby red.  It's all spice and incense on the nose. This wine is light-bodied, with clean strawberry/raspberry notes with nice spice on the finish, not too much, just right.  We drank the bottle with a medium-rare NY strip.  Fabulous!

2004 - Santa Laura Laura Hartwig Carmenere Carmenere

The taste of Chile...literally.

Wine people talk about "terroir" the taste of a specific region, coming through in the wine.  This Carmenere has the taste of the Rapel Valley.  I find this wine quite extraordinary. The bouquet is a little spicy. The rich medium-bodied wine is full of interesting flavors, cocoa, truffle, and on the finish, mint!  This wine is still rather mellow, and would pair well with red meats, mushroom dishes, or a robust cheese.

I gave this bottle as a gift, then I was invited to a dinner party, and our host opened it!  Lucky me. The wine had very intense dark purple color, with cedar and tiny hint of spice on the nose.  It was very simply, perfectly balanced.  Not too much fruit, or spice. This is how a Bordeaux SHOULD taste.  Elegant, and refined, and layered, with a silky mouth feel and a soft, but lingering finish. So easy to quaff.  Great vintage!

2002 - Chateau Margene Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon

BIG Cabernet but easy to drink!

At 15.3% alcohol, you might think this wine would snap your head back, when first opened.  On the contrary, this cab is beautifully balanced.  Hints of licorice and tobacco on the nose, make way for intense blackberry, currant, flavors with a touch of earth and spice.  Really loooong finish.  This wine made me lick the inside of my wine glass to get the last droplets. I was at home...

2005 - Crios de Susana Balbo Rose Of Malbec Malbec

The rose for people who don't like roses!

I really like this wine.  It is inexpensive, good value for your buck.  This Malbec Rose has more "oomph" than most roses.  It has a great color, light clear red, NOT pink.  It is well balanced, with round berry notes, and a clean finish. Great with BBQ pork or spicy Thai.

2003 - Topel Syrah Cuvee Donnis Syrah

Talk about complex!  Berries and spice, and oh, tiny hints of mushroom and earth, jammy and chewy on the tongue, with a lovely lingering finish.  This wine is beautifully balanced, great to drink now, but I'm thinking could only get better(!), in the next five years.

2005 - Sierra Vista Fleur de Montagne Proprietary Blend

Rhone blend will charm you!

From the lovely label, the "fleur" in this case is a California poppy, the "montagne", the Sierras, this wine is a winner.  An extremely versatile Rhone style red, easy to drink, with good body, tastes of strawberries, and currants, with a little pepper on the finish. It is a blend of Grenache and Syrah, Mourvedre and Cinsault. I would pair it with mellow cheeses, or a nice grilled steak.  If you visit the winery,( it's darling), you MUST take Snows Road!  If you have a small sports car, so much the better, have a designated driver for the way back!
