Classic Bordeaux in every regard and I appreciate that. Nose of graphite forest floor, oak, coffee, toast, smoke and cherry. Lean feel in the mouth but stronger on the finish. Enjoyable drinking for sure! 91 points

Nose of sweet sweet cherry, huge chocolate, oak, toast, coffee, and forest floor. The wine is smooth in the mouth although a bit meaty. The finish is oaky and sour. Not unpleasent though. Decent wine. But not remarkable

1983 - Chateau Palmer  Bordeaux Blend

wine of the vintage?

Everytime I have had the Palmer served with the Margaux the Palmer has out performed the Margaux.  When I have the Palmer by itself it hasn't performed well. Of the last two bottles, one was flawed, and the other was just so-so. The wine was lighter in color than the previous tastings. The wine was also  much leaner and tannic in the mouth. While not without charm it did not live up to the expectations nor did it really have the typical flavor profile. I guess this wine has a lot of bottle variance both inb regards to taste and quality.

First the color struck me. Much lighter than the bottle I had six months ago. Dark core but a lot a bricking towards a translucent edge. Initail powerful nose of licorice, chocolate, leather and olives, centered around or anchored by dark fruit and plum.  The palate is very elegent and smooth with excellent balance, althoguh much lighter in the mouth then the previous tasting.  After a couple of hours the wine improved very little. The fruit opened up but the secondary nuances disapated. Now a bit of smoke and raspberry dominates the nose. In the mouth the wine is still elegent and seemless but the finish is highly disapointing being short and without personality. Other than a nice palate this bottle did little to charm. -90 points     (previous bottle 7/07) Was glorious. Big and fairly full bodied and very dark in color. The fruit was perfectly ripe, plush and velvitity.  In the mouth the wine had no hard edges. It was smooth and balanced and yet had considerable wieght and structure. The fresh herbed finish went on for over a minute. An outstanding california cabernet at its peak. -95 points

The nose was singing-like a choir

Second time with this wine. Bottle was ex-domaine, label, fill, and capusle was perfect, cork slightly depressed. Cork was bad as it crumbled apart and required surgey to get out. The wine was lighter in color than the last bottle. It was a murky redish brown. At first the nose was a major let down. The nose was showing nothing at all, and in the mouth the wine was lean. I thought this was corked.  After about 20 minutes the wine started to change.  There was a light bouquet of carmel, old saddle leather, black ground pepper, and just a hint of game and orange marmalade. On the attack the wine was smooth but still lean and acidic.  The finish was short and bitter.  After about 2 hours in the deacanter HOLY COW!. The wine was signing. An unreal exotic nose of pine and dried tobacco leaves. The palate is a bit more resoved, while still very smooth, it is less lean and acidic. the finish is much longer and less bitter as well. The exotic nose reminds me of why I love wine. It resinates on all levels. I love this wine. This wine however disappoints in the lack of backbone vis a vie lack of fruit. And hence, the legnth suffers as well.

a simple straight foward 61

The condition was perfect and so was the cork.  There was a young  healthy reddish brown color that was pretty solid to the edge.  The nose was fruity with wet stones and roasted vegtibles.  The wine was drinking young for a 61. After several hours the wine was still holding on well. Smelling like a strawberry patch with salty wet rocks. In the mouth the wine was very smooth and balanced  with a medium-long finsih.  Very good bottle of wine but by no means outstanding or legendary.  -93 points

Dark ruby color. Big nose, very rustic and meaty. I am getting a bit of wet clay and wet coardboard and figs. The wine is very chalky and heavy in the mouth. Very tanic and lacks intergration thanks to some generous oak. This is an old world classic style beast that if it integrates over the next couple of years it should improve greatly.  ** after a few hours the wine did soften up and the fruit did flesh out some. The wine turned more floral *still earthy with some sauted shitaki mushrooms, lots of figs, and peppery with a hint of toast. the fruit now seems a bit more ripe. i was going to rate this 87+ but after a few hours perhaps it should be a very solid 88+

second bottle in the last 12 months. Tonight the bottle was in great shape with fill well into the neck. Dark core with a tad of lightening to the edge. Powerful mature nose dominated by spice, dirt, tobacoo leaves, a hint of leather, all with a slight green charector but really lacking focus. There is a sweet hint of candied( in a good way) red fruit. But lacking a backbone.  The nose is pungent but not seductive. in the mouth the wine is soft, smooth, and seemless. This is were I assume it gets its high scores. The finish is very spicy and lasts for about 30 seconds. If you got em drink em. 91 points. Lacking in charm and that wow factor but possesing finesse.

2005 - Calon Segur La Chapelle de Calon Bordeaux Blend

decent everyday dinner bordeaux

Apr 27, 2008

I knew nothing about this wine other than it is one of the second wines of Calon segur. This one contains a larger percentage of merlot than the Marquis de calon Calon segur. This wine was under $20 and I purchased this in my quest to find good value 2005s. This wine is very good and is a great example of the vintage struting it's stuff (IE. fruit and balance). When opened the wine was livley but tight. There is no question of the bright fruit and stuffing. It was a little new world in style I thought. Aromatically the wine was fairly shut down. The tanins are present but nothing I would be concrened with. For a 20 dollar wine there is great blalance and purity with a full body. After a few hours the wine is a bit more aromatic with a nice herbed finish. The nose is still to over-powered by the fruit but it is still lightly perfumed.

Very dark and opaque. Very nice! The nose starts out as a very sweet smokey graphite nose that is a little exotic. Underneath, there is just a hint of walnut. While the mid palate is still tight and closed it does have a smoothness and clearly has the stuffing. The finish is still a let down at this stage of the game. No doubt this is a sexy classy elegnat wine. I will purchase more. An easy 94 points

This was a huge suprise. Huge nose of sweet raw and just cut green bell peppers, light black pepper, sweet cheery, sandlewood, and a bit of funk. Very burgandian nose. This wine had great feel in the mouth with a long finish. This wine is fully mature and this bottle was showing this at its peak. I will buy more of this. 93 points.

Amazing! Medium mahogany from center to the edge. Clean! This wine is pure class in a glass. Very old world nose of old saddle leather coupled with a tar like smell that made it remind me of an oiled old baseball glove. There was a hint of sweaty socks and some vegitaible aromas along with cigar ash. The nose on this wine rocked. One of the most focused and detailed bouquets i have every had the pleasure to know. In the mouth the wine soft and still plush and no hard edges. This did not drink like a 1970.  One of the better Latours I have had, the best from 1970. Drinking at its peak but can go on for 5-10 more years with ease. 98 points

Very dark in color. Opened and poured. Did not require much decanting or airtime. It performed right out of the gate. Nose of smoke, prunes, plums and cocconut.  Fruity and fleshy in the mouth black and blueberry pie with a wet lava stone crust. Nice detailed finsih. This wine, while clearly not a right bank bordeaux and screams california merlot this will out perform many vintages of Cheval Blanc (94,95,96 and 97 come to mind). 93 points.

Served blind to me, and double blind to the group.  very Dark purple Nose of flowers, toast, meat and leather. Livley and fresh fruit flavors (cherry and blackberry) on the palate. However this felt a little awkward. Maybe it is just because of its age. I thought it was a little disjointed. The finish was short and bitter. This should improve with age.

Amazing nose that competes with high pedigree hermitages. The wine looses me in the mouth and in the finish were it is dull and empty (read just lacking stuffing).  90 points for nose alone.

Dark ruby in color and solid to the edge.  It looked much younger and darker than I thought it would. The intial nose of stinky cheese and off-putting vegitables blew off after about 20 minutes and then left nothing behind. Perhaps this wasn't and off-bottle and it simply was just over the hill and dead.

An off bottle story

Apr 27, 2008

I have had the pleasure of having this bottle many times over the last few years. All have been amazing despite reports of bottle variation. This occasion was clearly the excpetion as this, sadly, was not very good.  (From a .375) There was a very powerful nose of asian spices, soy, and mushrooms, but no fruit. No fruit anywhere. The palate was hallow and empty. The nose and palate, despite its complexity, was very off-putting with the abscenseof fruit. Color was lighter and body was clowdy. This was clearly a bottle that suffered some damage along the way. Could these be one of the bad bottles we hear of?  This wine is normally a mid to mid-high 90s wine.

Almost black-purple to the edge. Nose of pencil shavings, ketchup, and sweet fruits. Very big and concentrated. Dusty in the mouth. Medium and plesant herbal and cherry finish. Decnet but at this stage it is nothing extra-ordinary. Time in the bottle shall suit this Margaux well.

2003 - Grand-Puy-Ducasse  Bordeaux Blend

classic bordeaux (for 03)

Apr 27, 2008

I have had this wine half a dozen times since release.  The fruit, for 2003, not over ripe (perhaps more in the style of or 89). It is a wine that has charm, finesse, and structure for a $30 or less.  Very consistent with previous tastings. The nose is very intruiging. Huge dirt and underbrush nose along with red apple cores with seeds mixed with cherries and dirt with hints of raw meat and leather.  The finish is long and detailed. The palate however, is a major letdown. It is thin and watery. I do not remember the palate like this. The wine on the front and back would score a 92 at this tasting. Add in the palate and now we are in the 89 range. To be fair after a few more hours the palate was not as bad as the fruit fleshed out. The nose showed a more classic pauillac profile with sents of graphite, cocco,  and toast with a less awkward palate. Overall score 90 points.

Typical New world fruit. This wine was complex, tasty, and had a nice mouthfeel. However this wine was overly sweet. So much so that I couldn't enjoy it as much as I would have liked. Certainly of good quality and at a nice price point if you like them sweet.

2005 - La Butte, Domaine (Jacky Blot) Bourgueil, Mi Pente Cabernet Franc

One of the most complex wines at any price point

Apr 26, 2008
1 star 1 star 1 star 1 star

Despite this wine being overly dry and possessing roughness in the mouth it is nevertheless still outstanding. This is one of the most complex and highly perfumed wines in the nose, mouth, and finish.  This is one of those wines that you can almost extrapolate just about anything you want out of it. The scents in the bouquet range from huge walnut very Paulliac or St. Julien (think Las cases or Latour), beef stew, animal fur, chocolate, Smokey tar-like scents (that borderline on charcoal)  and tree bark with plums, raisons, cherry, and black currant all mashed in the dirt.  The explosion of flavors carries through in the attack with a very rustic personality. Although it comes across dusty and harsh it still has a bit of elegance. The finish is long and charming. If this wine ages well and softens up on the palate this might just be the bargain of the  year.

This bottle could not have had better provenance. And thus, the wine drank very young for its age. The color was darker than any of the 78s I have had. The nose was unreal. It had some type of oil or petrolium smell that I could not describe but it is was really enjoyable. I couldn't take my nose out of the glass. The palate was almost as good but was not up to outstanding standards. Same for the finish. This wine does deserve of mid-ninties score for charm, aroma, and maturity (or lack there of) but I am not sure it is worth the price of addmission considering this bottle was ex-winery and was among the best out there.

Right from the initial pour this wine was clearly in a class by itself. While I am more into the old world wines, even though this is a skyskraper that does not dance lightly it is amazing that is boderline perfect. The nose was both complex and sexy with great focus. The palate was smooth despite its power. No hard edges and the tannins were integrated well. The finish was long, detailed, and remarkable. I actually prefered the 2001 over the 2002.

Second time with this wine since release. The nose started out tight yet possesed very appealing sents of white flowers, leather and hot asphalt. In the mouth the wine was light, sour and tannic with a short bitter finish. After two hours the fruit fleshed out and became more plush to what I connect with the 2003 vintage. While the wine improved with time the finish did not.- Tasted in bottle right after-release- no formal note but I recall the fruit being more acessable with a longer more detailed aftertaste ( I gave it an easy 92).
