2005 - Long Shadows Merlot Pedestal Merlot

Another Insane WA wine

Jun 13, 2008
1 star 1 star 1 star 1 star
2005 Pedastal..another Long Shadow wine with Michel Rolland as the wine consultant. This is 100% Merlot ( I think) and has WA Pomerol written all over it. It is new world to be sure. Nose had leather, dark fruit/black berry, dirt and even a hint of rubber. Finish was seamless with wonderful chocloate. I've  had the past two vintages of this wine and this is the best. The '04 had a dirty penny finish. The '05 does not. From start to the finish it was nearly seamless and nearly flawless. This is what insane WA wines are all about.  Kudos to Michel Rollland and Longshadow. This along with the Sequel and the Pirouette, they have hit a home run.

2000 - Smith-Haut-Lafitte  Bordeaux Blend

A 2000 bordeaux

Jun 13, 2008

Smith Haut- Lafite...the nose bursted with rich dark sweet fruit, coffee & leather. In the mouth dark fruit, lead pencil and leather along with a touch of chocolate, coffee, and smoke. The finish was sweet and long. Still a very big and young wine. I'd try this again sometime after 2010.

2001 - Leoville-Poyferre  Bordeaux Blend

2001 Chateau Leoville Poyferre, St. Julien

Decanted  the Poyferre about four hours. Nose initially was closed but opened up to reveal lily/lilac, leather, splice, and black plum. It started out as an elegant wine with ripe sweet tannins and gained weight over the course of the night and just seemed to get better and better. By hour 7, the wine was fully open and very expressive in both the palate and a good 40 second finish. Very good St. Julien winery.

1985 - Dominus Proprietary Red Wine Proprietary Blend

Perfect marriage between Napa & France

May 21, 2008
1 star 1 star 1 star 1 star

1985Dominus - This, like other aged Dominus, is the perfect reflection of Napa while showing Bordeaux complexity and character. On the nose earth, dirt, and a touch of saddle leather. The fruit was still quite powerful considering the bottle age of this wine and still had a long sweet finish. Dominus is one of  the best reflection of bordeaux style Napa wines and while this is not my favorite vintage of Dominus, it is sill a very good wine.

1997 - Pertimali (Livio Sassetti) Brunello di Montalcino Sangiovese Grosso

An Italian Brunello

May 21, 2008
1 star 1 star 1 star 1 star 1 star
a beautifully balanced wine that had a touch of leather on the nose and red and dark cherry fruit on the palate. Medium bodied and still tannic. One of the most balanced wines I have had in some time. Remarkably youthful and remarkable balance between fruit, acid, and tannins.  Easily can go another ten years and a great Italian wine.

2000 - Monbousquet  Bordeaux Blend

An Excellent St. Emilion

May 21, 2008
1 star 1 star 1 star 1 star 1 star
2000 Monbousquet....another St. Emillion wine that just got better and better as the night went on.  I have been disappointed with some vintages of this wine in the past but this is one of the best Monbousquet's. Has balance between the fruit, acid and tannins. Notes of dark fruit and saddle leather along with coffee and chocolate on the nose. Very sweet and silky mouthfeel with both black and red fruit and a long  & sweet finish. Though still young this wine has decades ahead of it and will only get better. Great St. Emillion wines rock!!!!!!!

2005 - Clos St Jean Chateauneuf du Pape Proprietary Blend

A CDP from the Famous 2005 Vintage

May 21, 2008
1 star 1 star 1 star
2005 Clos Saint Jean CDP...this wine really needs at least 6 hrs decanting at this time.   Intitally you couldn't guess it was a CDP. Very big, muscular, fruity and a lot of licorice on the nose and on the palate. Only after 6 hrs or so did it any CDP profiles of meaty and earth characteristics. It is a young but very good wine that is now very muscular with very sweet fruit.  Something to lay down for awhile and I suspect it's going to be very good in another 5-10 years.

1996 - Havens Wine Cellar Bourriquot Proprietary Blend

An aged California Meritage

May 21, 2008
1 star 1 star 1 star
1996 Haven Bourriquote... Nose showed black tea and very floral. In the mouth dark fruit and perfume; almost a margaux elegance. For the first 4 hrs plus it was a stunning and elegant wine with black fruit and soft tannins. Toward the end, the menthol came out and was a bit too pronounced.  Overall, a very good wine and  to me, made more in a European style than a California style.

1998 - Mouton-Rothschild  Bordeaux Blend

What a First Growth is all about

May 20, 2008
1 star 1 star 1 star 1 star 1 star

I had the Mouton several years ago. It was decanted at least 8 hrs if my memory is correct. The longer it decanted the more the nose showed typical bordeaux profiles of leather, dirt, smoke, and cassis. It is an extremely focused bordeaux, much like a swiss watch in it's precisions of flavors. It often is what separates the first growths from the second and third growths and that is the precision of flavors that are not muddled as other growths are. It is a powerful yet elegant wine that gained weight over the four hours it was consumed. Point wise, I think Parker and Tanzer are more accurate than WS on this wine.  I can see that this wine could actually be a 50 yr wine as Parker suggests. No matter, it was IMO a remarkable and amazing wine that will always stick out in my mind for it's power yet elegance and it's precision of a first growth.

2003 - Guiraud G de Chateau Guiraud Sauternes Blend

Delicious Dessert Wine

May 20, 2008
1 star 1 star 1 star 1 star 1 star

Had the Guiraud with a lemon bunt iced caked and lavender ice cream. A very complex and balanced sauternes with sweet honey on the nose along with a hint of pineapple and botrytris . Sweet yet balanced by the acid and a long lingering finish of honey.  Not a d' Yquem but at a fraction of the price, a delicious sauternes.

2005 - Hamacher Pinot Noir Pinot Noir

Hamacher Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley

May 20, 2008
1 star 1 star 1 star
2005 Hamacher Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley...decanted for about 5 hrs and showed black-red fruit and spice on the nose. In the mouth it had ripe, but not overly ripe dark fruit, quite precise and delineated with a substantial finish. It could almost pass as a burg. I had the rest of the wine two days later and it had become more burgundian and the finish was very impressive and quite long. This wine without question would compete with many burgs from France. With a few more years of bottle age, it should become even better. Highly recommended for an Oregon Pinot

2002 - Cos d'Estournel  Bordeaux Blend

Cos d' Estournel

For the vintage this is an excellent Cos. Nose of leather, black fruit and licorice. A mouth coating palate of lush dark ripe fruit and almost polished tannins.  A very good St. Estephe wine and was among my fav of the '02 vintage along with the Pape Clement.

1998 - Penfolds Shiraz St Henri Syrah

St. Henri Shiraz

May 15, 2008
1 star 1 star 1 star
1998+ St Henri Shiraz...still very dark with just a touch of age on the rim of the wine. On the nose, dark fruit and blackberry. On the palate, more blackberry fruit, spice and mineral and a touch of leather. Gaining complexity without that over the top in your face fruit. A nice shiraz at that price

2005 - Lascombes  Bordeaux Blend

Beautiful & Elegant Bordeaux

May 15, 2008
1 star 1 star 1 star 1 star 1 star
2005 Chateau Lascombes,Margaux.. I've had several recent vintages of this wine and this might be the best yet. Dark purple in color it is still somewhat primary but there are many secondary profiles beginning to show. The nose has dirt and leather and when it opened, blackberries and the Margaux perfume/flower elegant nose. It is now medium bodied and a very balanced wine with sweet black fruit and a plush mouth feel. More precise than some other bordeaux's I have had recently which I think bodes well for the long run. I would not open another for 3-5 yrs. unless you have a lot and want to try one young as this is definitely a long lived wine. A great buy for '05's IF you like bordeaux and the Margaux type of profile.

2000 - Bodega Numanthia Termes Numanthia Tempranillo

Numnathia

May 15, 2008
1 star 1 star 1 star 1 star
2000 Numnathia ... dense, thick wine with spice and anise on the nose and mouth as well as a fair dose of vanilla.  Night two of this wine and the spice and anise gave way to more earth/mineral and asphalt. Still quite big and even better than the first night.

1990 - Lagrange St Julien Bordeaux Blend

What aged Bordeaux is All About

May 15, 2008
1 star 1 star 1 star 1 star 1 star
'90 Lagrange.... Notes of leather and some dirt/earth on the nose (which I love) and subdued dark fruit and some minerals on the palate. A graceful, sweet lush and refined finish. A very elegant wine that has evolved very nicely into it's secondary flavors.

2005 - Sequel Cellars Syrah Syrah

A Decadent WA Syrah

May 15, 2008
1 star 1 star 1 star 1 star
2005 Long Shadows Sequel..this is a WA syrah made by the famous John Duval of Grange fame. The wine is absolutely inky dark in color and has a nose of meat, dark chocolate and cherries. It was decanted for over 6 hrs and in the mouth it was well, like drinking chocolate. It is super extracted and the word I kept saying over and over was RICH. It is a rich and a decadent wine that is super concentrated and quite massive.

1998 - Clos l'Eglise  Bordeaux Blend

1998 Grreat Right Bank Vintage

May 15, 2008
1 star 1 star 1 star 1 star 1 star
1998+ Clos L'Eglise, Pomerol..wow!! The nose smacked of a Goodyear tire store, smoke, and licorice. On the palate more smoke, tire, some dirt, black fruit, flora and a finish that lasted a very long time. While this wine was not as focused or precise as say a first growth, it was nonetheless a memorable wine. It left you wanting more of the wine.

2001 - Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon Cabernet Sauvignon

A Polished Napa Cab

May 15, 2008
1 star 1 star 1 star 1 star
2001 Caymus cabernet ... This wine hasn't changed much since the last time I had it 3 yrs ago. It is still a huge cabernet that hardly budged over the 6 hours it was open. Is this wine impervious to oxygen?? Still, the nosed showed dark fruit, spice, and eventually the typical napa cab nose. In the mouth, just as I remembered yrs earlier, black cheery and currant and very polished with depth.

Right Bank Star

May 15, 2008
1 star 1 star 1 star 1 star 1 star
'96 Cheval Blanc.....decanted for 30 minutes or so and drank over the next 5 hours. Medium dark in the glass. Intially, huge nose of tire and fruit but a bit tight/closed. By the end of the bottle we were getting, tire nose, leather and rasberry that was soft, absolutely delicious and at least a 45 second finish, if not longer. A rather complex bordeaux that literally covered the whole palate. This is an absolutely beautiful elegant boreaux and worthy of a higher score than Parker gave it. A truly memorable experience.

2002 - Pape Clement Graves Bordeaux Blend

Excellent bordeaux from a less than excellent vintage

May 15, 2008
1 star 1 star 1 star 1 star
2002 Pape Clement Grand Cru Classe De Graves....Parker said this was a candidate of the wine of Graves and I wouldn't argue. Color was dark plum and nose showed leather, dirt and very sweet black plum fruit. A very lush rich moutfeel with an added touch of licorice and ripe, sweet fruit and tannins. The finish wich was sweet lasted a good 45 seconds.

2005 - Quilceda Creek Cabernet Sauvignon Cabernet Sauvignon

Another Winner from QC

May 15, 2008
1 star 1 star 1 star 1 star 1 star
2005 QC Cabernet.. On the nose, very dirt like with hints of earth, stewed plums, blackberries and violets. There is a lot going on with this wine. On the palate, with more dark fruit, licorice, cassis, spice and and flora notes. This wine is more elegant than I thought it would be. I thought it was very remincisent of the 1999 QC. It's rich yet elegant and structured and has many bordeaux characteristics. To me this wine is better than the 2004 though not by much. I could taste the finish hours later..maybe it was just thinking about the wine A remarkable achievement by a Washington wine.
