2004 - Ste Michelle, Chateau Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve Cold Creek Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon

Old school new wine!

Jun 12, 2008
1 star 1 star 1 star
This vintage was a good old world style wine. Tasted berries and cherries, and dirt. Not dirt in a negative way but old world dirt. It brought just a small touch of mustiness that really made this wine. Serious sediment and I made sure the last glass had a little mix. A very good wine that changed slighty over time, from a berry/dirt to a little more of a cherry/dirt. Drink for the next 10 years!

This wine was more tart than the nose prepared me for, but the flavors were really fulfilling for the entire attack-midpalate-finish-all-dem-fancy-wine-words experience. The cherry and cool mint flavors top'd off this wonderful effort!

Yummy Again!

I loved this vintage as well.  The nose on this wine was out of control. I got some musty covered blackberries (like the kind you find on the ground under the vine) with intense fruit. Dust and fruit. Yum. The palate did not dissapoint. And that's the most important part.

Alcohol Boo!

Jun 12, 2008

I wasn't able to separate the alcohol flavor from the rest of the fruit flavors and, objectively, this could have been better integrated. Regardless, subjectively, this gave the wine a nice little bit of character/attitude, and I responded well to it! The cherry and oak flavors were not too bad.

Just as good as 2004

This vintage was just as good as the excellent 2004! It had oak, garden/earth, spice, and red fruit on the nose followed by a complex palate with subtle tannins, great mouth feel, chocolate and licorice... overwhelming complexity!

Complex

This wine was extremely complex and kept changing on us, which is one of my favorite aspects of drinking good wine, from cedar, to chalk-dust, vanilla ... you name it ... dusty rocks, chocolate, licorice, et al! At one point I tasted the asparagus!

This vintage had a very long finish with tastes of sour cherry and plum. This wine is a great experience. A little sweeter than I like my wines, but a great wine that you should seek out.

This vintage surprised me, as a really fabulous wine and it tastes more like Burgandy wines than American wines that I've had. First smell reminded me of maple syrup with walnuts and cherries. Tastes of black cherry and silky vanilla. Drink it up now!

Too Much Oak

Jun 12, 2008

Too much oak! Some spice, some green pepper, vanilla and smokiness from the oak, but far too much oak. Left the bottle open for hours and hours and hours in the hopes that it would mellow, but it never did. This wine was far too over-oaked; tasted like a freshly sawn oak board from the sawmill.

More Like Merlot than Pinot

Jun 12, 2008
1 star 1 star 1 star
Aftert popping the cork, the nose and first sips did not disappoint, but did not taste at all like a classic Pinot Noir, rather more like a fruity Merlot. We thought it would get better, but it never did. It wasn't terrible but did have that unmistakable essence of cheap wine. The overall experience was, well, rather fake. Sweet and fruity, jammy even, with no earthy, green, or dirty-sock aspects that one expects in a Pinot Noir. Some nice grapefruit, but otherwise like a simple, run-of-the-mill Merlot.

This wine is a very fruit forward style of pinot. strawberries, plum. not a very complex pinot. very easy to drink, but much better oregon pinots to be had for the $25 retail price. There are just too many better buys out there.

Well, I'm more New World than I care to admit; however this is a very solid wine for the money. It is rustic - some cherry and cedar with strong herbs...and some nice tart fruit. All in all, I appreciate the integration of old and new world flavors.

This wine on the nose, has a lot of veggie, spices, and black pepper. Slight strawberry on the palate, but nice roundness, unfortunate short finish and light tannins. Great example of value from the Chileans!

Steal for the Money

This wine had a nice medium-level tannins. The wine didn't linger as much as I'd hoped at the finish, but that may have been related to the strength of the food we paired it with. Overall, this is an outright steal for the money.  Good strawberry and cherry palate.

This wine was a little bit too dry for me but it delivers a nice mix of earth and cherry. On the palate the wine is dry and full, with more of the earth and cherry notes, along with a stronger black pepper taste. It rewards taking your time with it, enjoying its subtleties.

Barnyard Cabernet

Jun 12, 2008
1 star 1 star
This wine needed several hours to open up quite nicely to a well-balanced medium- to full-bodied mouthfeel, with OK tannins and a nice dry finish. The palate exhibits that same sense of barnyard and orange as the nose warned of, with some green pepper, black pepper, and a hint of orange sweetness. This wine is a little bit zesty, actually.

This wine is a more expensive bottle that tastes the same as the lower end wine. Some nice black pepper immediately apparent, and I'm very happy that it doesn't smell too fruity. Nice nose, big and different, old-world style. Some nice funkiness that I can't quite describe. Some nice spiciness going on.

This has a  lot of beautifully sweet oak is evident and the mouthfeel is thick with several layers of tastes, many flavors that are very consistent on the palate including: black licorice, deep dark chocolate, cherry and raisins and raspberries and some strawberry. A berry tart emerges from the dark.

This Cabernet has immediate notes of leather and dark, dark cherry. A very intense and concentrated nose right from the start. A deep raisin aroma pervades the leather and reminds me of an amorone - only covered in oak and not that sweet.

This was a very sweet pinot. Not a bad wine, drank young, but it tastes like it should be drunk young. Tastes a little like stale mostly unsweetened cherry kool aid. Nothing spectacular, but not bad. About as expected at this price point.

Too Expensive

Jun 12, 2008
1 star
This wine is too expensive for what it delivers. The color is very vibrant cherry red (not-quite-ripe Bing cherry red, not fake cherry red). Sadly, the wine goes downhill from there. On the nose I got a precocious whiff of rubbing alcohol that barely calmed down to weak antiseptic after 3 hours of air time.  The fruit is just killed by the alcohol, making this a huge pass.

This was a very dry and crisp version of Sav Blanc. It tasted like a grassy meadow in the morning mist with a mixture of fruit: peach, grapefruit, and kiwi. An odd soda aspect coming through as well - that's just weird. But overall not bad.

This wine has a sickly sweet finish, showing lots of alcohol, cloying banana and fake cherry. The wine is just bad at first, but gets worse and worse as the finish builds on itself. I ended up dumping the bottle and wishing I still had my money.

This wine on the nose there is a promising barnyard and coffee note, but this is largely hidden by sickly sweet flower and banana. The body shows banana in force, with a bit of cherry and strawberry. Drink with a big juciy pork chop!

This wine  has a nice classic Merlot aroma, soft and polite, this wine is sincere in what it brings, and for those who are patient and dig deep there is much here to enjoy. As the wine grows into itself, the nose offers some nice complexity, adding whiffs of cream. Delicious!

Shiraz!

Jun 12, 2008
1 star 1 star 1 star
This was a good example of Aussie Shiraz!  This is somewhat perfumed but with enough fruit and minerals to make it all work. On the palate it has a clean and elegant feel, somewhat making up in crispness what it lacks in tannin, and a bit warm at first. A very dry sensation on the mid-palate with much of the mineral essence that was on the nose, only a hint of tobacco. Big cherry fruit also.

This has a nice clean finish, though not too long, but again we are more used to reds. This stuff tastes real. Not too fruity, a very nice muskiness, no fakeness, not sweet and very balanced from what we can tell. Perfect alcohol balance as I wasn't even aware of the alcohol.

This has a very spritzy/zesty mouthfeel, focused on the tip of the tongue: alive and enthusiastic. Nice plush mouthfeel while still remaining crisp. I'm not too used to this much acidity, without the tannins as a balance, so it seems a little too acidic.  Still a good value.

This was another great vintage. Very well balanced. Not quite as much grapefruit and tartness as other vintages I've had. It has a bit more creaminess, but not too much like a Chardonnay want-to-be, which I really liked. This was very refreshing on a hot summer day. Found myself drinking it a bit too fast. Great price, I will buy more.
